Specs: i7 4770k, 16GB Corsair RAM, Asus Maximus VI Hero, EVGA 780ti w/ ACX Superclocked, Phantom 410 Mid Tower

I currently have 2 120mm fans (one exhaust and one intake) and one 140mm exhaust fan. My GPU under max load hovers around 78*C, while my CPU around 70*C (coupled with a Cooler Master 212 EVO). Because I plan to overclock eventually, and possibly add another GPU in SLI, I figured it was time to add more cooling.

I plan to add a 140mm intake right next to the GPU (side of the case), a 140mm exhaust out the top of the case (right next to the other 140mm exhaust), and a 120mm intake at the front of the case next to the other 120mm intake. Is this overkill?

Yes. SLI = hotter GPU's, and 80C won't be cool enough for me. If your GPU's stay at that temp, it would heat up your CPU too. I highly recommend filling up your fan slots with premium fans. Most stock fans are crap.

Your plan would be ideal. There is never overkill when it comes to cooling.

If you go SLI, then yes add another fan. Don't put in too many fans though or it'll just be unnecessarily loud

i would say add the fans on the front and top but i dont think the gpu one will be worth it, maybe vent the side if you want more, what case do you have

No such thing as too many fans, fill her up. With a CPU air cooler in there leave the rear exhaust fan. You could put two good quality fans in the front and a 120mm instead of a 140mm for the side with a direct airflow feature since you're using it to get better GPU temps. The side fan is definitely a good idea when doing SLI. Have a look at your temps with one 140mm in the top first, if you're still unhappy add another one.
