Overclocking Intel Pentium 3258

Go to solution Solved by JeyPee12,

I would just get a cheap Z97 board like the MSI Z97 PC Mate

From my understanding, pentium g3xxx supports up to 133mhz RAM and you need g4xxx to use anything higher. I may be wrong though.

I would just stick with a Z series chipset for guaranteed overclockability

ASRock Z97 Anniversary... Made for the G3258 ;)

Thinking about this CPU for a budget gaming build, but it being my over clock I want some advice on a motherboard.

This is the motherboard I would like to use. It has decent reviews and is easy on the wallet, but can I overclock on this board or do I need a new Z87 or Z97 chipset?

Full Build

CPU - intel Pentium G3258

MoBo - ASRock B85M-HDS

RAM - G. Skill Rip Jaws X Series 4GB @ 1600 (is this too fast for the cpu?)

HDD - WD Blue 1TB

PSU - Corsair CX500

GPU - EVGA 660ti SC

Hyper 212 for cooling

What's your case?

Generally you want a Z97 board. Also, 1600 isn't even the fastest RAM, that's the low end.

1600Mhz is the standard RAM speed for most average to high end PC's, most still come with 1333Mhz. Faster speeds are only moderately common on custom built PC's.

I understand that it would be better, but will I be able to overclock on this board?

According to this, the RAM requirement is 1333

I would get this with your budget. Business class boards arent the hottest with OCing.

Asus announced it that it would be possible on b85. This is ofc on their mobo's though, not on asrock.

That would put me over my budget of 450

Get an asus board of equal price and b85 and it should work.

H97 has no OC support unless it's asus. Basically if you're not buying asus you need z87/97. Otherwise you can take the chipsets listed in the link I posted

It should work but you might need a bios update before it supports the OC'ing. Recommend googling this before you buy. If you want to go the safe route though get z87/97.

well unofficially certain MSI and Asus H and B chipset boards can support overclocking with the Pentium

but Intel has found this and may release a microcode patch to stop this exploit in the near future

Budget? Uses? Currency? Location? Operating System? Peripherals? Monitor? Use PCPartPicker wherever possible.

Waited for almost an hour. No word from Asus on whether or not the MoBo I suggested is compatible. Anyone have any other suggestions?

sometimes the reply will take days to come back

give them time

it means MSI is telling you to use the Z board for OC

According to this thread some H81, B85 and H97 boards from MSI, GBT and ASRock can unofficially overclock the G3258

http://www.overclock.net/t/1500423/non-z97-z87-boards-than-can-overclock-the-pentium-k-g3258

Thoughts??

well its true but Intel hates it

means ppl can buy a H board and OC

so they are putting a stop to it

So Intel only wants Z97s to OC the G3258?

exactly
