laptop connected to internet/router but cannot connect?!?!?!?!

so my dad's laptop has this problem. it will be working fine then boom, no connections go through. I cant even ping google. turn on and then off airplane mode and it will work fine again for a while. any idea what is causing? it is a HP envy 6z-1100 sleekbook I turned off power saving to the wifi card already. and am going to give all devices in my house static ip's inside the router. any other ideas would be great.

Try checking for updated ethernet/LAN drivers and install them, see if it fixes your issue.

best way to troubleshoot is always work your way backwards.. has this happened since something new is installed/updated to the laptop or is this since day 1?

 

check for latest wifi adapter drivers here. may fix your issue:

Is it on Windows 8? This tends to be an issue, occuring randomly with some people's installations.

yep, just updated to 8.1 and it got worse, reinstalling the drivers brought it to how it was before 8.1 but it still happens.

Try manually setting the IP address and DNS server (on the computer).
