Can't Choose!

Go to solution Solved by GhostWindGamer,

The hero and the 280x

2 things in 2 components that I can't choose.

Motherboard: ASUS Maximus VII Hero or ASUS Z97 PRO Wifi

Graphics Card: GTX 770 or R9 280X

Which and why?

For the motherboard, if you're not worried about appearance or the OMG I GOTS AN ROG BOARD I'M A BOSS factor then go for whichever's cheaper. They'll generally perform the same.

As for the GPU, 280X. Explained why in your other post.

Nearly the same price. (ROG = $30 more) My case will be windowed, so the ROG is like a little tap on the aesthetics.

Well ROG doesn't always look better, it depends on the color scheme of your components as well. The Z97 pro would be better for an all-black build, whereas if you have other black and red components like MSI/DCU graphics card, then ROG boards would suit better.

Planning on the ROG board with a R9 280X DCU II and the fans have red rings. The ASUS PRO has the gold theme, and I can't find any gold graphics cards or other decorations.

Yeah then that'd be nice. I wouldn't exactly call it gold (that's more of the Z87 line), it's more like silver in real life.

Basically the R9 280X is better?

It trades spots with the 770. Basically the same now, but in newer titles or if you get a 1440p monitor the 280x is likely to pull ahead.

i5 4690K

be quiet! Dark Rock Pro 3

8 GB Corsair Vengeance Low Profile RAM

Seagate 1 TB SSHD

EVGA 750W Gold PSU

Corsair Obsidian 750D

From my perspective I'd change these (don't have to do so, just what I would do personally)

Noctua U14S instead of DRP3

HyperX Fury instead of blahblahexpensive RAM (save some money)

Dedicated SSD + Dedicated hard drive (speeeeed)

Don't like Noctua in my red themed build.

The RAM is $97.

Ded. SSD + HDD = $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

No, they're roughly equivalent. The 770 can be overclocked a bit more as well.

Generally the cheaper one is the one to buy.

AMD has more variations in the chip lottery. Some 280X's overclock worse then 770s, some are the same, some will overclock so high you'll reach cooling issues before you reach stability issues regarding the chip itself.

That makes it fun.

My 4770K can't reach 4.2 GHz on 1.168V. It's the rare crappy ones.

Replace the fan with a red one. lol

The DRP3 hides too much of the mobo IMO

Red HyperX Fury is around $80 and color matches the red on ROG boards better (red vengeance LP is a bit off)

Don't wanna change anyway. The DRP3 has a brushed aluminum that matches the exterior of the case.

I don't like Kingston RAM. And I'm sticking with the DRP3 so low profile it is. We're talking about $10 here.
