Ideally you should be getting an i7, they're better for tasks which make use of multiple threads eg engineering programs. I wouldn't recommend getting AMD, especially since your university recommends at least i5. I recommend a 4670K/4690K if you're going with i5, or 4770K/4790K if you're going with i7. If you won't be overclocking get the non-K version of whichever CPU you choose.

The I5 will be much better than an old FX processor. I suggest a 4690K or go with an I7 if you can afford it. 4790K for an I7.

Hey guys! I'm majoring in aerospace engineering, and my university recommends I get at least an Intel i5 processor. Should I follow their recommendations or, based on your experience, would an AMD processor of comparable power be better suited for engineering programs?

You could get an i7-4790K.
