What phone to get?

I am in the market for a new phone, my Xperia U is on its way out, and am tossing up what to get.

 

I am not on a contract, nor do i want to go on one, I want to buy a phone outright, however am only willing to pay no more than $500 AUD at the most.

 

I have read good things about the Nexus 5 and HTC One (previous gen).

 

 

Which one should I get, or are there others that I should consider.

Nexus 5 for the updates.

Can you buy phones that people have gotten on contract and just want to sell? That's usually how I pick up mine.

Nexus 5 is a solid choice and even better in terms of specs than the HTC.
