I have windows 8.1, originally got 8 and updated it. Will I be able to update windows 8.1 to 9 for free?

You usually won't be able to, but they have offered free upgrades a few times in the past. It is usually a limited time offer, so keep your eyes open.

Prob not, but if it isn't a free upgrade I'm pretty sure Microsoft has discounts for users of the previous version.

Who knows? If you really want it, when it first hits the market is when it will be at it's cheapest, so don't hesitate.

I haven't found that to be the case, though to be honest I don't buy a lot of Windows these days. At least, not software windows.

Microsoft makes nearly 100% of its money by selling Windows licenses. It would be nice it they would make it free like OS X but they can't afford to lose any of their profits. They gave out 8.1 to quell the bad PR over the original 8 and to temporarily satiate the power users.

Sometimes when they release they offer at a lower price to entice people to take it up, I have never seent hem have a sale or special on OS's so consequently the price only ever goes up from release.

As for free, MS can't afford to give it away because they can't build the cost into hardware like apple do.  HP, dell, acer, etc make the money from hardware they only make cash out of the software.

Every new version of Windows requires a purchase, but sub version are free.

However, watch out during 2015 when Windows 9 will be released, Microsoft usually has a crazy promotion. Windows 7 for example had 3x licenses for 50$ each (so 150$), Home Premium was 60% off, and Professional was 50% off. In the case of Windows 8, you have the Pro version + Media Center pack for 40$ only. Less than a game!

So stay tuned. Hopefully, Windows 9 will also have a crazy discount price for the first couple of months.

I think they offered the low price with Windows 8 because nobody was buying it. :|

Probably not, but hopefully like others have said, Microsoft will offer a discount for early adopters. Really all I am hoping for is a public beta (Like 8.1 was) to see what it is like.

As goodbytes said, that and before win8 release they had a $14 special in Aus. where if you bought a pc with the offer then when windows is released you got the win 8 upgrade.

Doubt there will be a free upgrade, but I'll be keeping an eye out for pre-order prices. It may have been more to do with the EU browser competition thing at the time, but I pre-ordered the full version of Windows 7 HP for £45.
