Someone doesn't write many citions.

Someone doesn't know how to spell.

I guess the schools are letting the kids just copypasta rando forum posts into their Bibliographies now.

This isn't an academic paper, it's a tech forum. Audio is very subjective but that article does not treat it as such. If you would actually read it instead of trolling me you might learn something.

"The sound card has a ~150 ohm amplifier on it"

I highly doubt I'd learn anything from reading the rest.

And?

We've thoroughly derailed the discussion and the OP is disinterested. Let's end this, shall we?

Why? The OP's question was answered ages ago.

Whoever wrote that "article" is clearly poorly informed about audio, at best. That is not how you specify the power of an amp.

How would you specify it?

Ordinarily amps are specified by the resistance of the largest speaker they can drive.

That's how marketing divisions like to specify amps. In reality, an amplifier has three characteristics: power, voltage, and current. Additionally, these vary with the impedance of the load. So you really cannot sum up an amp with just one number. Also an important consideration is the output impedance of the amplifier; if it is too high there may be impedance mismatching with some headphones, leading to damping factor problems.

Speaker amps, yes. Headphone amps, no.

The standard spec list format is the power output @ 32ohms.

A, tablet autocorrect and that face when.

B, Audio is science, and can be approached as such.

I understand electrical engineering. I've just never seen amplifiers specified as anything but resistance.

I didn't realize it was different for headphones.

I think it's prudent to note at this point that I'm not an audiophile nor do I claim to be. I bought the sound card to get Creative's surround sound engine (software) and it was a good deal. It's also much better shielded than my onboard is.

Fine. Then you'll also know that the power requirements of a headphone are determined by more than just impedance - namely, sensitivity. So giving an impedance as the specification of an amp is doubly oversimplifying things.

Don't care. Me neither.

As in I don't know jack shit about audio. I know that the things you are saying are true, from an engineering standpoint, I just don't know the specification conventions of audio products.

Like ShearMe said, the conventions is to state the power output at 32 ohms. Like I said, that really doesn't tell you a whole lot.

I'm not saying sound quality, but have you actually tried a good sound card? The difference is night and day with positional cues.

Xonar D2X

Xonar Essence STX

Dolby Headphone

DTS Connect

"Headphone" setting inside the game

I've tried all those and both my HD598 and HD650 surely have the best positional accuracy when skipping any virtual nonsense. The HD650 to me has such precise positional accuracy by itself that there's no need for any fancy software.

------------------------ Liquidfox R3 ------------------------

Fractal Design Meshify 2 Compact – Corsair AX860i – Asus ROG Crosshair VIII Dark Hero – AMD Ryzen 7 5900X – Nvidia GTX1070 Founders

The AD700 are really good at positional accuracy too. Don't expect any bass though.
