Hey guys, so i have a predicament i have recently come into some money and i have been saying to my self for a long time that i am going to buy my self a new router/modem the only problem is that i dont really have any idea about them. all i know is that it needs to be as fast as possible and be able to reach to the other side of my house no more than 20 meters but passing through quite a few walls. the reason i want it is because i am pondering purchasing a new computer and as we rent this house i cannot run a cable through the wall/ roof to my bedroom. It needs to have an included modem so i can plug it in straight from the wall and be ready to go but i guess if it means a bit more speed then i could spend a bit more for a modem if need be, please keep in mind that my budget is around $250-$300 AUD

SYSTEM SPECS

CPU> Intel 4790k< GPU> EVGA GTX970< SSD> Crucial MX200 250Gb< HDD> Seagate Barracuda 2Tb<
Cooling> Corsair H100i< Case> Corsair Air 540< PSU> Seasonic X-Series 650W< RAM> 8Gb Kingston HyperX<

since no one is replying ill give it a shot

there are a few ways to have good wifi range across the house

method 1 : power line networking what it basically is , is that it makes ur electricity cables in the wall act as an ethernet cable

method 2 : wifi extender - there are many types crappy cheap ones and really good enterprise ones / they will catch the wifi signal and spread it

method 3: get a single powerful wifi router / this method might be good might be bad depending how thick the wall are

ill just talk about method 3

keep using ur existing modem the ISP gives u

its normally hard to find modems as good as the ones ISPs give you

and combo modem/routers arnt really that good performance wise

so after u get a new router u need to "bridge" the modem to the router each modem is different  so u need to find out how to do it

basically what a bridge does is that it makes the router do all the work which is what you want

cable from wall > ISP modem > new router

according to www.smallnetbuilder.com

the best wireless N router with range is N66u from asus

http://www.smallnetbuilder.com/wireless/wireless-reviews/31687-asus-rt-n66u-dark-knight-dual-band-wireless-n900-gigabit-router-reviewed

Thanks for the reply mate, yeah i have thought about powerline but this house is wired weird according to my parents, all the living room powerpoints/ lights are on a different circuit breaker in the fuse box so we are not sure if it will work and im not really feeling the idea of paying $150 for a powerline kit only to have it not work... i have been looking at http://www.pccasegear.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=200_1439&products_id=27761&zenid=bbe5819ee053ee7b4735a312d98c0bed this router/modem yes i know its expensive but that just what things are in australia you want a good product you have to fork out the cash

I think you should "Quote" his post so he knows you answered him.

O: That router is bloody expensive... I think it's better off going with what @qwertywarrior said, "cable from wall > ISP modem > new router" and getting the ASUS RT-N66u or if you want to get an AC router, go with the ASUS RT-AC66u.

You must "Quote" to get my attention.

okay but the modem my ISP gave me is both a modem and a router is there a way to turn off the wifi that it sends out and just use the wifi from my new router?

You know what, I'm actually facing the same problem here. I have a modem/router from my isp and I was planning on getting the AC66 router.. :/

I think it depends on what kind of modem/router you have. Not sure how to do it. Sorry.
