I5-K is fine for gaming. That R9 290 is about as good as it gets on the 290.

The Asus K can't run a second R9 290 if you ever want to. The MSI board can. So would a cheaper MSI like a Z97 SLI or whatever board. Look at the PCI lanes and make sure the second one is not not running at 4x.

See under specs here?

That has 2 PCI 16 3.0 lanes and a 2.0. If the 2.0 was 8x instead of 4x that would be fine.

Now see the lanes on the Asus board? Second one (PCIE 2.0 which is fine) is 4x. That = won't run a second card well. That and network and sounds are the difference. The network and sound differences are meh. Even the cheapest boards have good network and the sound isn't bad either. The lanes? You can add a second r9 290 on one board and not on the other.

Both boards will run a single r9 290 or any GPU maxxed though.

Yup. The second r9 290 would be neutered running at 4x. 8 x 2.0 is plenty for a second GPU. The MSI board goes past that. So it all depends. Would you ever want to run a second R9 290?  Avoid that Asus board. If you realistically are only going to run one GPU? Get the Asus board.

My board only can run one good card. There is nothing wrong with that. It is just what you plan to realistically do. I also might swap my board out for a 4790 though and a better lane board. :)

The sound/network? The premium network cards on board are a crock. Almost all z87/z97 will overclock very well from MSI/Gigabyte/Asus and Asrock's are supposed to be decent on z97 as well. The onboard sound? That can matter depending on the sound setup. Other than that and PCI lanes you are comparing aesthetics.
