How does one decide between headphones?

Using these for gaming/music/movies. I listen to all types of music, minus the really bass heavy music like electronic/rap, but would still like some bass to be there since I find that important for immersion in games. Imagine Dragons, One Republic, Skyrim Soundtrack, are just a few examples of things I listen to.

Having a hard time choosing between the hd598/dt880/dt770.

Then I'm even further distraught wondering if I should even be buying that expensive of a headphone and won't notice the difference between that and buying a hd518/558 and being done with it all.

So how does one decide what is right for them without buying all of them and trying them out?

I pick the one I think is prettiest and call it a day. I've spent $500 on headphones because the sides are made out of carbon fiber.
No one here is going to be able to tell you what you will like when it comes to sound, so just roll with something that is generally
accepted as not ass, and choose on something you personally like about the headphone.

Exactly. Try them out and see what type of sound signature you like most. Neutral? Light bass? Heavy bass? V-shaped? Then choose based on that.

I personally prefer neutral because it gives the right amount of bass when a certain song calls for it. For example if you have an already bass heavy headphone, when you play a bass heavy mastered song, you get a doubly bloated bass. But everyone has their own preference so go try them out with all the genres of music you listen to. For gaming, any of those headphones you mentioned will be more than adequate.  ;)

I live in a small town right now where the closest thing I have to headphone trying is Best Buy, and this one near me has Beats for half their display.

Just can't decide between the 880/598 and it's driving me mad...

880, because the 598 is overpriced and the same as the 558, which is mostly the same as the 518

But then that begs the question - 518 or 880?

You try them out.

That's basically it. Headfi meets, music stores, audio stores, Google around you, go with a friend, make it a fun event.

Although I feel if you're genuine confused it probably means you wont' hear a huge difference. But you never know.

And that is exactly why I am terrible with decisions.

I can get a 598 for $170 and a manufacutrer refurbished 880 for $186. (Both have at least 1 year warranty) Just time to decide which one I try first.
