So I recently turned 16 and am saving money. There seems to be this feeling that when you have to get a car. I am not sure if I want to save up to build a pc or buy a car. I got into computers about 6 months ago and am really interested in them. I really don't need a car in high school and because of the field I want to go into, I would need to go away for college/uni anyway (many do not allow you to have cars). Because I am probably going to go for a degree such as electrical or computer engineering, a pc is starting to look like a better investment for me. Just leave your thoughts because I still have a lot more thinking to do.

I would definitely say save up for a PC. I am a high school senior, and I went the route of building a PC, instead of buying a used car. There have been some instances where it would be nice to have a car, but overall, building a PC was a great choice. You will learn an immense amount about computers, and I am also planning on majoring in computer engineering next year, and building a PC was one of the experiences that led me to this decision.

First question to ask is:

Do you need a pc?

If you ever need help with a build, read the following before posting: http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/3061-build-plan-thread-recommendations-please-read-before-posting/

If that's the sort of course you're looking for, then a pc does make a lot of sense, as long as your parents are willing to ferry you around. As you say, there are some uni's that prefer you don't have a car, and the parking is not always great even if they do. If you do end up wanting a cheap mode of transport, you could always get a bike. Insurance is so expensive as well, you could always wait until you get a job for the car.

Do I NEED it...well no

I want to start gaming and am developing an interest in making videos. so yes and no

Well I mean nobody NEEDS anything. If you have a legitimate reason to build a pc, do so.

Which one do you believe will get used more? If it's a PC, then save up for a PC.

Car insurance for under 21's is extortionate to say the least.

I am not going to use the car that much. I would mainly use it for getting to and from school (which i can just take that bus or get a ride with a friend) and just getting from point a to point b which in high school isn't necessary when I like the exercise of a bike.

Good point with car insurance. In the states, car insurance is insane and doesn't seem worth it for high school

Hard choice, once you have had a car you wouldn't want to live without one... Perhaps build e midrange PC AND get a car?

The thing is once I have a degree and a good job, I would probably have to get a new car anyway and I probably wouldn't be able to really use one during college/uni anyway

Unless you NEED to drive a car, there is no reason to get one, it's cheaper to use public transport and safer. Most people I know don't have cars because you don't really need one, at least where I am from, and a pc will be something you will use daily for years to come. Also a good pc is like a gateway to learning more about computers, using and working with them. The fact that you are going to a college or uni is also a good reason to get a nice pc, for studies/homework and playing with new class/room mates.

If you're in the UK, get a car and insure it, the sooner you do that the sooner your premiums drop.

I actually wouldn't need to use it that much because most of the places that i need to go to are within walking distance

Aww naw i didnt mean in your situation, i ment his point is mostly invalid.

But trust me, if you got your own car you would use it a hell of a lot more than you think, for totally retarded journeys/trips, its just how it is.

I would not spend too much on a pc, if I was you. I wouldn't get a super cheap car either.

Imo it would be better to just save your money for a while and then buy whatever you need more at the time that it is really needed.

I don't really play many games for gameplay anymore honestly. I play most games just for the graphics.

It's still a while off and I still have a lot of thinking to do. I probably wasn't going to decide anytime soon anyway. I'm just getting some food for thought.

So anyway, good point
