thermalpaste on VRM & memory w/ heatkiller 7970 block?

So can i use thermalpaste instead of thermal pads for the VRM and memory on the heatkiller 7970 block? I would use Arctic MX-4. Thank You!!

not really. the TIM is a simple gap filler as the TIM pads are actual conductors of heat.

trying to transfer heat in .5-1.0mm of TIM just is not efficient nor effective.

use the pads on the VRM, VRAM, and VREG. use TIM paste on processor.
