Hey guys I am having some trouble with my graphics card. Sometimes when I am not doing graphics intensive stuff like web browsing my screen goes blank then returns to normal and I get a message saying the Nvidia driver has crashed.

My system is a new EVGA SC GTX 780 ACX cooler on a MSI z97 gaming 5 motherboard, with an i7 4790k. Also my power supply is 650W 80+ Gold.

What is going wrong and can I fix it?

Are you using beta drivers?

No just drivers from EVGA and NVIDIA.

Try reinstalling them. Or downgrade to a more stable driver.

Are you using the latest drivers?

the 337.88 is the latest one which is certified for windows on nvidia's website

Here are your options

1. Reinstall the driver and test it again

2. Downgrade your driver to check if 347.88 is the problem or not.

3. If possivle try to use another GPU using the same drivers

4. Check for viruses

Another followup question are you using geforce experience?

New and Windows certified doesn't mean it's problem-free.

You haven't overclocked have you?

Does this happen if you take 100Mhz off the core + memory clock using MSI afterburner?

I just reinstalled 337.88. Yes I am using GeForce Experience.

Then I somehow encountered that problem.

The driver crashes when i sometimes opened Nvidia Geforce experience. But not when Browsing. Try to uninstall Geforxe experience and test it. Thats how i get rid of it. Dont know if our issues are somewhat related

I went down to 335.23 and haven't experienced a problem yet. Only annoying thing is GeForce experience telling me my driver is outdated lol

Go try some heavy gaming/rendering then browse the net.

If theres no problem then its the driver

"nvidia drivers are better than amd drivers"

see, both sides have issues

No, this is an isolated issue with one person. AMD drivers have wide spread issues that affect millions of users with every single driver release.

You said initially that you got the "driver not responding" message when you were browsing. I used to get the same message when browsing on chrome about a year ago. The monitor would black out and flash back on with the message.

I found a fix then that might work for you now if you are using chrome. The problem lies in the fact that chrome comes with its own flash player and sometimes users install another one separately.

so, if you are having driver failures still, try this out: http://www.howtogeek.com/103292/how-to-fix-shockwave-flash-crashes-in-google-chrome/

  • CPU - i7 3770K
  • Motherboard - Asus Maximus V Formula Z77
  • RAM - 4x4GB Corsair Vengeance @1600 MHz
  • GPU - 2x Asus GTX Titan
  • Case - Corsair 550D
  • Storage - Samsung 840 Evo 1TB
  • PSU - CoolerMaster 1000W 80+ gold
  • Display(s) - Alienware AW2310 1080p, 120hz
  • Cooling - Noctua NH-D14 Air Cooler
  • Keyboard - Corsair K65 (Cherry Red)
  • Mouse - Corsair M65
  • Sound - Asus Xonar Essence STX, Beyerdynamic T90

Sometimes this happens when heavy GPU usage is happening especially during gaming and it happens on all the drivers, both BETA and WHQL. All sorts of different problems can cause this but if it says it was recovered then it is probably ok and you should do a restart but if this is happening over and over again for no real reason then the GPU should be RMAd.

Like I said it is doing it went it is not even under load. Like when I am using chrome or just on my desktop.

OK. I haven't had the issue with the older driver. Should I leave it like that or should I talk to EVGA?

You should talk to EVGA but you should also put back the older driver too. The new BETA 340.43 driver is very buggy and i think it killed my 660ti. I had no problems with the 337.38 driver and all previous drivers but with the 430.43 i got not GPU core clock and voltage for whatever reason.
