I was playing Splinter Cell: Blacklist and PC suddenly turned off before and then back on automatically. Since then I have been smelling a burning like smell coming from my PC. At the time I had a R9 295x2 installed with a 850W 70A XFX power supply. I decided to switch back to my old GTX 690 but I can still smell this burning like smell ever so slightly.

Any ideas on what the problem is and why I can smell burning? D:

It maybe be the PSU Overheating? as the R9 295x2 eats power like no tomorrow.

Ive had the same problem with my AMD GPUs and CPUs. I have just ignored it and now moved those systems into a enclosed cupboard where the smell wont escape.

None of them have set on fire/failed yet and have ben running at maximum load for months now.

Sometimes you can get a burning smell caused by a build up of dust on hot components such as heatsinks. Try giving your computer a good clean out, it might help. You will probably notice if some other part of your computer is actually burning (instability/crashes etc.)

I mean you could, but the R9 295x2 only takes ~650 watts under Furmark load, and ~500 under normal gaming load, so 850 should be fine.

Hmm, but if that is the case why does my PSU smell like burning. I have used the R9 295x2 for 3 weeks solid and now all of a sudden It smells burning? I have no optical drive installed and only 1 HDD and 1 SSD installed. Also, H60 cooling for my CPU...

Check your case vans and your HDD. I've dealt with PCs where the rotors in fans had the issue in the past and I've had the delight of turning a PC on only to watch a HDD motherboard burn in small places.

850 Watts is enough for a r9 295x2... I don't know where that comes from...

I thought the 2 inputs had to be on 2 diffrent 12v rails?

Might be the power supply or the cables got a little melted (worst case scenario).

Or a fried bug.

I roll with sigs off so I have no idea what you're advertising.

This is NOT the signature you are looking for.

OK, it's definitely the power supply. I had a good sniff and the back of case whilst FurMark was running. Smells like burning plastic from inside PSU. Probably will just get the Corsair RM1000. You think I could maybe keep modular cables in case and then plug straight into new Corsair PSU? I cba to take cables out and then re-organise modular cables that come with Corsair RM1000 xD

That's only on multirail powersupplies.

The Seasonic based XFX power supplies all have most of their wattage available on the single 12V rail so it doesn't apply.

You could if they were based on the same platform but I'm pretty sure the RM1000 is made by Chicony whereas the XFX unit you have is probably made by Seasonic.

As you can see in the below pictures the Corsair unit uses different modular connector pin-outs, I'm sure that the 24 pin is obviously different.

Cool. I'll just replace cables then. RM1000 should fit in a Corsair 300r case, right?

Since @Brendson said the RM750 fit into the 200R, and the 750 and 1000 watt units are the same dimensions (I checked), there shouldn't be any problem

It'll be quite a bit larger though than the XFX unit.
