The VAIO is dead.

connorpiper

If that was your favourite electronic device you need to try more things.

People say I have issues. And I do.

But this was a winning design. A quad core CPU at .66 in. And a 1080p display (Beat the macs 1600x900 at the time)

I have fixed so many laptops over the years...and thus used them all....

and I could not find a VAIO I liked. The screens were always so crappy it was like I was looking at it through a screen door.

The build quality was comparable to Toshiba's satellite line.  Ugh

But the design was nice looking at the very least.

Dumb choice to do tablets only IMHO. But I'm not some kind of marketing expert.

muh specs

Gaming and HTPC (reparations)- ASUS 1080, MSI X99A SLI Plus, 5820k- 4.5GHz @ 1.25v, asetek based 360mm AIO, RM 1000x, 16GB memory, 750D with front USB 2.0 replaced with 3.0  ports, 2 250GB 850 EVOs in Raid 0 (why not, only has games on it), some hard drives

Screens- Acer preditor XB241H (1080p, 144Hz Gsync), LG 1080p ultrawide, (all mounted) directly wired to TV in other room

Stuff- k70 with reds, steel series rival, g13, full desk covering mouse mat

All parts black

Workstation(desk)- 3770k, 970 reference, 16GB of some crucial memory, a motherboard of some kind I don't remember, Micomsoft SC-512N1-L/DVI, CM Storm Trooper (It's got a handle, can you handle that?), 240mm Asetek based AIO, Crucial M550 256GB (upgrade soon), some hard drives, disc drives, and hot swap bays

Screens- 3  ASUS VN248H-P IPS 1080p screens mounted on a stand, some old tv on the wall above it.

Stuff- Epicgear defiant (solderless swappable switches), g600, moutned mic and other stuff.

Laptop docking area- 2 1440p korean monitors mounted, one AHVA matte, one samsung PLS gloss (very annoying, yes). Trashy Razer blackwidow chroma...I mean like the J key doesn't click anymore. I got a model M i use on it to, but its time for a new keyboard. Some edgy Utechsmart mouse similar to g600. Hooked to laptop dock for both of my dell precision laptops. (not only docking area)

Shelf- i7-2600 non-k (has vt-d), 380t, some ASUS sandy itx board, intel quad nic. Currently hosts shared files, setting up as pfsense box in VM. Also acts as spare gaming PC with a 580 or whatever someone brings. Hooked into laptop dock area via usb switch

Their last effort was one of the best displays on a convertible. With the WORST WiFi card ever and a strangely high price tag.

I have not touched those. Hmm..

I mainly refer to the 1366x768 panels in a lot of low-mid range VAIO laptops as well as some of the mid range panels at 1600x900 or similar.

There are million things wrong with that resolution, including the fact that ever manufacturer refers to it as HD and beautiful, for marketing to those uninformed (dirty tricks) and even though it it technically is "HD", it is the lowest resolution you can get on a laptop.

But sony's always stuck out as the worst to me. the spacing between the pixels was ridiculous, it looked terrible compared to other 1366x768 panels.

I do have really good eyes, and I can see the spacing on most screens that resolution from a  good distance, but the VAIO ones were ridiculous.

I know I'm not the only one with the complaint. I would have return anything with a screen like that if I bought it, it was just that bad.

Not to mention they were know for literally just falling apart at the hinges, not even low end current dells with the plastic as weak structurally as a cardhouse or Toshibas from a  few years ago do that.

Most people that use a computer as part of their job or not just to browse facebook that I knew owned one regretted it.

Sad, too. Sony is not a bad brand quality wise normally.

BTW almost every vaio I repaired was a screen replacement, usually a bad backlight (not inverter) or non drop related problems.

All of the newest ones had 1080p IPS Displays with great color coverage and accuracy. And 15" models had a 2880x1620 option.

Also my E series had the 1366x768 display that was not that great, but the colors were really good and viewing angles were not too bad (For a TN panel)

I'm with you there - it is nearly the perfect computer. The only downside is the weak speakers, shallow keyboard and headphone only jack. Everything else is amazing and I'm glad I was able to pick up one when I did. Perfect form factor, screen size, screen resolution, great performance, battery life, external GPU/DVD drive, etc.

The viewing angles were ok, but bad colors in my experience. But I haven't messed with many vaios since like the 2009-2012 lines.

1080p IPS is good to hear, but is that on low end lines? Sounds like it and that's cool.

Yea it's on the low ends. The Sony low ends. $800 for the base Flip model.

I think that was always my problem with the VAIO line. People payed decent money for laptops that while thin, had terrible screens and toshiba build quality .

But 800$ for 1080p and some basics is not at all bad.

Still will always hate the "low end" plastic super thins.

You had plastic or Carbon Fiber. The VAIO Pro is the thinnest 13" laptop still and it bends because they made the computer out of Carbon Fiber, it was supposed to bend, and survive. My E Series (Was the affordable model that I made $1800) was plastic and it had no creaking and I could hold entire weight on the corner without it bending.

My Flip 14 (Fit 14A) has build issues on the underside, but the plate of stainless steel would make sure that it would bend, just make sounds. EHHGHHGH.

every thin plastic vaio I used had incredible flex to it and almost no plastic to hold the hinges attached. Not a bad keyboard though.  The E series, I had less experience with I think, I think those are the ticker ones?

Not really thick, but not thin. I would say they were a little thinner than a standard laptop.
