Scared me shitless.

DarkEnergy

Ok, so I've been looking to get a crap end laptop for school and to mess with linux on for a while now. So I found a pretty good deal on craigslist, went there, it was alright and bought it. (Dell Latitude E6400) for only $85. (bargained) It ran great and was is brand new condition. After I got home I noticed using hwmonitor that if the cpu got in to 50%'s the temp would go up to high 60's c. (It's a core 2 duo 9900, I read they can go up to 100c. 'Was suppose to be 8600 but I don't think the seller even knew, I didn't tell him...) I thought that was pretty high for being 50% so I flipped it over and put on some fresh new thermal paste. Note: I had to disconnect the cpu fan for this. After I did that, I turned on the computer and noted the cpu fan not spinning. I was sweating balls. By the time it logged in, It still wasn't spinning. I quickly opened up hwmonitor to find that the cpu temps were only 40's and the fan wasn't even moving. I was confused. I had to use something cpu intensive so I downloaded minecraft and started it. After a few seconds, it was THEN that I heard a small sound start up and the fan was spinning. Apparently it only spins at 70+ C. Is this some type of technology or is this normal? All I know is it scared me to hell. I thought I broke it.

Note: apparently after it hit 70c the fan stays on no matter the temp

It probably only spins up when the thermals get high enough for it to require faster dissipation.  Love your profile pic btw! /)

Laptops run much hotter than desktops and their fan control can make is so the temp has to get very cold before the fan turns off.

My Inspiron 1764 had a similar problem so I found a unlocked BIOS and flashed it so I had control of when the fan turns on and when it hit's full speed as well as enabling things like VT-d.

Mein Führer... I CAN WALK !!

Maybe it is spinning so slow that you can't hear it? Then ramps up when the Cpu temp is 70C+?

No because I was physically looking at the fan.

I have a laptop that has a silent mode profile that is controlled by the bios. Maybe the dell has a setting like that too.
