Yes, it isn't true for all cards and it constantly changes across generations. A 295x2 is more expensive and faster than a 690 for example (the titan z it another class of product and for games doesn't perform that well) and the 750ti is great value. You can say they are USUALLY cheaper, but not generally.

Fair enough

Is it possible to set up a pinned thread guide thing for choosing graphics cards?

It seems like the Red Team vs Green Team threads take over this forum a little bit.

what you can do is, do a list of minimum gpu cards for gamers from any company

(low-range cards are trash, and no one should buy that)

the mid-range cards are a good start

R7 250 is a good starter card for all gamers (also the 7750, the 6750, and the 5750, but they are a bit old)

(not sure with cards pick from the green side)

APU = A10

Generalizing means you are assuming every product that comes out of those companies will have the characteristics you listed, not that you only listed some of the benefits. Every product must be analyzed by itslef, without brand-related assumptions.

O.o okay

I think it is like that. If u want nice performance for your money --> Get AMD. If you want great stable performance go for NVIDIA. For the avarage gamer there won't be so much of a difference between the two, but for experienced one, there will be. I think AMD delivers quantity, while Nvidia delivers more quality (performance, users support and etc.)

CPU: Ryzen 5 2600, MOBO: MSI Tomahawk B450, RAM: Corsair Vengeance RGB 3000 (2x8 GB), GPU: MSI RTX 2080 Gaming-X Trio, CPU Cooler: Noctua NH-U12S, PSU: Corsair RM 650, HDD: WD Blue 1TB, SSD: Samsung 860 ECO 500GB, CASE: Fractal Design Meshify C

Exactly what are your needs?

Nvidia cards usually draw more power and are more expensive for performance, but they have little problems and always get good driver support.

AMD cards are better for the price you pay and for their higher end cards usually run very hot, and their current Gen Cards are just older cards, rebranded.

I don't have any needs, I know what card or kind of card I want.

I'm asking for new people that come along and want to know so maybe we can cut down on the amount of these kinds of threads :P

Because there are too many nVidia fanboys. We all know that AMD cards have a better price:performance ratio (excluding the 750ti).

Says the obvious AMD fanboy. Nvidia doesn't hold a 2 to 1 lead in the dedicated GPU market share just because of "fanboys". They hold a 2 to 1 advantage because they offer better hardware and software, to the point that people are willing to pay a premium for it.

AMD cards run hotter specifically because they draw more power. Know what the hell you are talking about before posting.

I don't want to cause a ruckus here but I've got a bit of a problem with your statement.

"Know what the hell you are talking about before posting"

How uhh.... How is someone supposed to know what they're talking about concerning computer hardware? The internet is a mess of misinformation in this regard.

"AMD cards run hotter specifically because they draw more power."

That's not necessarily the reason. The R9 280 doesn't run as hot as a GTX 780, does it? I think that misconception comes from the R9 290(x)'s reference cooler, which was bad at cooling that GPU. Take a look at the R9 295x2, it has two of those bad boys and it runs cool as hell. Alright, it has a AIO water cooler strapped to it but the GPUs don't make it run hot, do they?

"Nvidia doesn't hold a 2 to 1 lead in the dedicated GPU market share just because of "fanboys". They hold a 2 to 1 advantage because they offer better hardware and software, to the point that people are willing to pay a premium for it."

Again, this is not necessarily the case. AMD cards are just as good - if not better in some cases - as their competing Nvidia cards. Don't believe me? Go look at some benchmarks and things and stuff, just go do it. Nvidia drivers have just as many problems as AMD drivers, I know this from experience and days worth of trying to get those bastards to work.

I believe the 2:1 market share is more related to the "Percieved Value" pricing than the "Premium" pricing. Nvidia has convinced their customers that their cards are superior. Most customers in this market are elitists, they want "the best" of everything and are willing to pay for it. Do they necessarily get their money's worth? No.

I wish more people understood this.

Edit: Besides, this isn't the topic here. Please keep on topic. Yes, yes. I know I'm a hypocrite saying this.

The 280 is not an equivalent card to the 780. The 770 is the equivalent card to the 280 and yes it runs cooler than the 280 does. The direct equivalent to the 780 is the 290, which does use more power and run hotter. There is no misinformation, take the time to read benchmarks, and know what the hell you are talking about before posting. Heat is a direct byproduct of electrical power, products that use more power will run hotter. Specialty coolers can help bring those temps down, but they do nothing to reduce the amount of power the device is using. Just the opposite, since in most cases they will overclock the device due to the speciality cooler being capable of handling higher temps.

Reference R9 290 draws 254w, while the reference 780 draws 231w. 100% disproving EpicGeekonFire's claim that Nvidia cards draw more power. Even the 280x draws more power at 241w. No one seems to have wasted time reviewing a reference 280, so I can't pull valid temps for it, but it's only reference temps that matter when trying to compare AMD and Nvidia. MSI or EVGA slapping a speciality cooler on a card does not mean that the chip from AMD or Nvidia is magically producing less heat. That speciality cooler is just doing a better job at dissipating it. But since AMD and Nvidia reference coolers work the same way, it's those temps that matter when comparing the two.

So, according to you, Nvidia has simply brainwashed tens of millions of people and they are not in fact the better company? Are we just going to gloss over the fact that Nvidia put ATI out of business because Nvidia offered significantly better products and that AMD's buyout of ATI has done nothing to change that. All AMD ever does is cry, bitch and complain that Nvidia isn't being "fair" and keep demanding that Nvidia should be forced to share all of their hardware and software advancements with the entire industry. It's nothing but sour grapes from a company that knows it's destined to go bankrupt because their engineers can't innovate their way out of a paper bag.

I want AMD to challenge Nvidia, but it's obvious that will never, ever, happen.

I want AMD to challenge Nvidia, but it's obvious that will never, ever, happen.

Ugh.. Here we go.

You didn't say anything about any specific cards, you said "AMD cards run hotter specifically because they draw more power". I know full well that the r9 280 is not equal to the 780. I'm saying that saying AMD cards run hotter is not correct. The high amount of power the R9 290(x) consumes is specific to the R9 290(x). Not all AMD cards use a lot of power.

"So, according to you, Nvidia has simply brainwashed tens of millions of people and they are not in fact the better company?"

There is no better company. Nvidia does it's thing and so does AMD. Neither one is better than the other. They are better at doing certain things but neither is better than the other overall. This is like saying a hatchback is better than a semi-trailer overall because it's small and easy to park. But wait... What if you want to haul an entire inventory worth of things to a business? Oh damn... The hatchback isn't as good anymore. Now to be fair, the difference isn't as noticable between AMD and Nvidia, but the point still stands. They are completely different companies and trying to say one is better than the other is pointless.

But yes, Nvidia would have their customers believe they are genuinely the better option. It's good business for them (not necessarily for the customer, however) and they like to take advantage of the elitist mentality that the computer hardware community tends to have.

"Are we just going to gloss over the fact that Nvidia put ATI out of business because Nvidia offered significantly better products and that AMD's buyout of ATI has done nothing to change that."

Why are you bringing up news from 2006? The graphics industry changes FAST and there is no reason to bring up news from 8 years ago.

"I want AMD to challenge Nvidia, but it's obvious that will never, ever, happen." "It's nothing but sour grapes from a company that knows it's destined to go bankrupt because their engineers can't innovate their way out of a paper bag."

If you think AMD isn't challenging Nvidia, you aren't watching the news. They're bringing out a bunch of open-source software in an effort to drive the industry forward and do away with all this closed patent bullshit. Look at what they did with the R9 295x2. They bought out a card that demolishes the Nvidia equivalent for half the price.

"All AMD ever does is cry, bitch and complain that Nvidia isn't being "fair" and keep demanding that Nvidia should be forced to share all of their hardware and software advancements with the entire industry."

How about you try and run a GPU manufacturing company and have your competition try to set themselves up as a monopoly? That's a genuinely dick move in the business world. Screwing over your competition means screwing over your customers. If a business truely wants their customers to get a fair deal, they'll play nice with their competetors.

Correct, there is no point arguing because you don't know what you are talking about. AMD cards draw more power, by the laws of physics that makes them run hotter. It's not just the 290X, it's all of AMD's cards. Nvidia had that issue with the 400 series, but they've been specifically working to reduce power, and therefore thermals, ever since. That's not to say that there won't ever be a Nvidia GPU that draws more power because, but it's a constant issue with AMD.

But srsly, even though they are hotter, price to performance ratio, i'd go with AMD. After all, those "HEAT" issue is addressed by using third party cooler. :P

Thing is though dude... You are right, a card that consumes more power will throw out more heat due to electrical resistance. That doesn't mean the card will run hot, however, that is what the cooler is for. A Vapor-X R9 290 will run a hell of a lot cooler and quieter than a GTX 780 with a stock cooler... But the GTX 780 consumes less power...

And no, you are completely wrong that all AMD cards consume more power than Nvidia cards. Did you just forget the GTX 4** cards or something?

Learn to read. A 3rd party company slapping a special cooler on the card only means the heat is dissipated better. The chip is still generating the same amount of heat. You can never say AMD is better than Nvidia, or visa versa, due to a completely different company installing a custom cooler on the card. That's like saying Nvidia cards run hotter when the AMD card it's being compared to has a custom liquid cooling loop installed on it. The power draw and heat of the reference design are the ONLY thing that matters when saying one company has cards that use more power or run hotter than the other.

Right the whole know your facts before posting is bull.

Some people are fed incorrect information or whatever, why not just point them to the correct info.

Anyway.

Here's what I know, I've had both AMD and Nvidia.

Between the most comparable cards.

•Nvidia use less power but if your an average user buying to save power it'll take years to get your money back (depending on how expensive electricity is in your area)

•reference AMDs run hotter usually but don't buy reference unless your water cooling

•both have fairly decent software no complaints

•Mantle is hit and miss, the lack of adoption for true audio is disappointing,

•AMD are catching up with shadow play but I've always found MSI predator to do a better job any competition.

Both make good cards.

The power draw issue is not about saving pennies on your electric bill. Constantly releasing inefficient cards is a sign of a company that either employs morons for engineers, or they simply refuses to put in the time and money to actual make quality products. That issue is further complicated by the fact that AMD can't release quality software either. Every new version of Catalyst is like playing Russian Roulette to see what else they can fuck up. The one and only thing AMD does right is their choice of VRAM quantities and bus sizes.

AMD's Shadowplay rip off only works on certain games and relies on 3rd party software support. Also, since AMD users have been bashing Shadowplay since it's announcement, they are forbidden from using AMD's Shadowplay rip off as a selling point.

First off I've heard endless quotes about how much you'll save cash wise buying Nvidia.

Secondly just because one card isn't efficient as the next it doesn't mean that AMD is cutting corners or have moron engineers.

And I have Noooo complaints about shadow play so go ahead and try and stop me using my freedom of speech.

I hate calling someone a fanboy but you sir are a fanboy.

That's a ridiculous generalization. As an AMD user, I think shadowplay is an excellent feature, and am glad that AMD users will be getting an alternative.

No, all AMD users do any time someone brings up Shadowplay is they say how stupid it is, or how they can use something like FRAPS, which costs $37, instead. AMD users have lost all rights to ever use a recording feature as a selling point.
