Buying an HTC one (M8) across the border

Hey guys, so my parents are offering to buy me a new phone for getting high honours in grade nine this year (needed new one anyways) and I told them I wanted the M8. The only problem is, in Canada I cannot find an unlocked version and would like the ability of changing carriers if a better deal pops up, plus the carrier I want to go with (Virgin mobile) has 10% off monthly plan if I bring my own.

 

But time for what I was really asking, if I buy a M8 from HTC themselves in the states and ship it to be picked up across the border, can I use it on Canadian carriers?

as long as it has the same bands it should work as GSM is a technology used by the USA.
