HDTV Blurry Display

Go to solution Solved by ROK,

It's likely because you're using a TV and HDMI for your pc.

If possible, use the VGA/PC connector on your tv (if it has one).

I don't know exactly why, and I'm sure someone else can provide both you and me with some insight on this topic, but using a TV with a PC via a HDMI generally has quality issues (unless its one of those "PC HDMI" ports).

Hi all,

This is my first post on here; I only just started getting into the "pc building scene."

I just built my first PC. Needless to say it was a lot of fun.

I plugged my 24" TEAC 1080p TV as my (temporary) display via HDMI and it looked great to start with. However, while I was setting up storage and customising my computer, when the display suddenly cut out for a second. When it came back, I instantly noticed that it now had a large black border about 15mm thick, and that the display on the screen was very blurry and fuzzy. I thought the issue may have been the drivers of my GPU (because I hadn't installed them yet), but when I installed them, nothing changed. I have fiddled around with over/underscan and that has removed the border, and I enabled ClearType which has made it tolerable.

Basically, it looks like it is being horribly upscaled to fit the 1920x1080 res that it listed both on Windows display settings and the AMD Control Catalyst software.

My graphics card is an XFX r9 280x. My motherboard is a Gigabyte GA-970A-D3P. The mobo only has PCIe 2.0 slots, but I found on various forums that that wouldn't make much of a difference. Please correct me if I'm wrong about this.

My little brother is out at the moment, so I might "borrow" his monitor so I can see if it just an issue with the TV, which I hope it is.

I'd appreciate any help or knowledge you may have about this.

Thanks,

lvskii

Thanks for the welcome and the reply my man.

Is there a way to tell that? Besides going into my Windows resolution settings, which does list it as 1920x1080.

What I would do is lower it, apply it, then try to set it to 1080p again.

Hmmm, just tried that then. Still just as blurry.

Also, I forgot to mention in my original post that when the display came back blurry after it cut out, a window popped up that said "Installing HDMI." Not sure if you have heard that beofer or not, but figured it may be important.

Thanks, unfortunately my GPU only has 2 DVI outputs, 2 Mini-DisplayPorts and one HDMI.

I'll grab my brother's monitor that he is running via HDMI that works perfectly. So I'll let you all know what happens then.

You should have gotten a DVI to VGA adaptor with your GPU. If you still have it, try and use that and see if there is an improvement.

The issue I stated above is with Televisions only. I experienced it when my VGA port on my viewsonic TV (that was used as a 2nd monitor at the time) died and I was forced to use HDMI. If the picture is no longer grainy with your brother's monitor, it pretty much rules out anything on the PC end (other than drivers, which rarely matter).

Yep, that's the problem. I hooked up a "real" monitor and it looked great. Thanks for the replies, guys. I guess I'll just make do with this until next payday. Again, thanks all.

Thanks for the further insight my dude. Unfortunately the only cables that came with my GPU were an 8-pin to 2x 6-pin, and a 6-pin to 2x three-prong molex, smh.
