Okay so today we received our internet bill for the month of May, and the total came out to be about $1,000. We've had expensive internet bills before due to high amounts of downloading, but never this high. Here's the catch, this time it isn't because of downloading, it's uploading that has done this. According to our ISP, we have been uploading about 60-70gb of data daily, and no one in my house uploads anything, let alone that amount of stuff. I assume it's some sort of virus.

Anyway, I currently don't have antivirus as it's recently ran out and I haven't got around to renewing my subscription, so I want to know: 1. What do you guys think the problem is? 2. How can this be solved? 3. Can you point in me the right direction of what sort of virus scan software I can download to rid myself of this issue?

Thanks a ton!

The internet provider has been called, and we've had them drop the overage charges for this month, but according to their records it's been continuing on for the last couple days. So right now the idea is to stop this from happening.

I have Cogeco as my ISP.

Are you using wifi moden? if so, is the network secure?

If not, then you may have other people in the neighbourhood piggy backing of your network.

It'll only take a couple of people torrenting on your un-secure netowrk to do something like that!!

Network is secure, yes. However the password has been changed since being made aware of this.

Ouch, that's terrible.

Check any Bittorrent clients that your home may have and do a virus scan with Malware Bytes on all computers.

Try to do a scan on phones as well because phone viruses have been a thing lately too.

Are you running wifi? If so, someone maybe using your wifi to upload files to a P2P program. Secure your wifi with a good password (I suggest using a password generator) and contact the ISP to dispute the bill.

@Jippy

Check out this Malware Removal Guide

I didn't have as bad as a problem as you are experiencing, but its a start.  This fixed it for me, and best of all it was free.
