What Power supply to get

FuriousFing
Go to solution Solved by daemonowner,

I don't think you will need to upgrade to a 750W. If you wanted 2 760's, you could do that on 650W with overclocking (since you have selected an unlocked K CPU). If you got a 760 for the meantime and upgraded to a better single GPU you would be hard pressed to need more than 650W again. If you wanted to add another high end GPU you should probably go with 850W. If you don't see yourself upgrading to 2 R9 290X's or 780Ti's then 650W should be fine, with overclocking as well.

Hi.

I am looking to get a 750w power supply. But I don't know which are good and which are bad,

I wanted to get the RM750 but a lot of people say that corsairs power supply's have some good ones but a lot of some are DOA and they don't work when you buy them.

So I was looking into the Cooler Master V series V750w it looks great. What I really need is a 80+ Gold and doesn't matter if it's fully modular. I kinda want semi modular but doesn't matter.

I don't want to spend anymore than $120 Canadian. Also if you think it doesn't matter if it's 80+ gold certified then please tell me the difference.

Hope you can help me.
Thanks.

EVGA has some good fully modular power supplies. The cables are sleeved too.

Would you recommend any?

Can you list your specs please.

The Cooler Master V700 is an excellent unit. The V Semi-Modular Series 750W unit is also very good. http://www.ncix.com/detail/coolermaster-v750-semi-modular-750w-cf-97010.htm

The RM Series is decent, but overpriced. They are about as likely to be dead on arrival as any others. I dislike them because of the second-rate capacitors they use. I wouldn't recommend it, but you won't go wrong with it.

However, I would recommend this above the rest. The EVGA Supernova G2 750W. Excellent unit, Almost Platinum efficiency, fully modular, and cheaper than the V750SM above.

@FuriousFing Are you going to be upgrading to multiple graphics cards? A 780Ti and 4790K can run overclocked on 550W. Not very comfortably, but they can.

Canada not US. Should've linked it on NCIX or another Canadian store.

Also the G1 Series you linked is unimpressive like the RM Series. The G2 Series is far superior.

The link was just for the name of the PSU. All he has to do is copy and paste to any Canadian PC retailing website and he's good a gold. Also, I didn't know there was a G2 series....

Updated link (US Retailer):

Maybe, I might have 2 Graphics cards sometime. I don't know yet. I could get a 650w until then. Just tell me what you think.

@FuriousFing If you're sure you'll upgrade to 2 cards, it would make sense to get a higher wattage power supply now. Would you be upgrading to two 760's at most? Because that should run off 650W anyway.

The little brother of the CM VSM above: The V650 Semi-Modular http://www.ncix.com/detail/coolermaster-v650-semi-modular-650w-b6-97011.htm

If you aren't going to be upgrading to multiple cards you could run a single 760 off 500W easily.

Yeah. What do you think I should do? I might get 2 760's or 1 R9 290x 4GB maybe even a GTX 780 Ti, I am not sure yet.

A single GPU is a simpler option. You could get a 760 in the meantime, sell it and upgrade to the 780Ti/290X or a future GPU (*cough* Maxwell *cough*). Either way you won't likely need 750W. You could go with the 650W VSM to keep your options open. Single GPU with 650W would give ample headroom for overclocking the CPU and GPU also.

So the Coolermaster V650? What is a Maxwell GPU? Is it a new one?

Yeah it seems to be good value compared to other 650W units at NCIX.

http://www.ncix.com/detail/coolermaster-v650-semi-modular-650w-b6-97011.htm

Current Nvidia GPUs (600 and most 700 Series) use the Kepler architecture. Maxwell is their next architecture and should be very interesting. It's hard to say what the next GPUs will be like, but we do know they've been delayed. Don't expect them any time soon.

Ok cool, thanks for the help. When should I upgrade to a 750w?
