840 SSD too slow.

Go to solution Solved by magic,

The speeds are normal. I have this drive and it performs exactly the same, it is only a budget drive after all

So my 840 SSD is getting

seq read: 510MB/s

seq write: 125 MB/s (OUCH!)

random read: 40,759 IOPS

random write: 22,603 IOPS

It should be rated higher than this. I haven't had the disk for very long. Less than a year or so. I've done the Samsung Magician performance/OS optimizations so I don't think it's that. Although, please mention if there's some optimizations I've missed. This isn't lookin' good for my SSD. I didn't bother testing it when I got it so I'm not sure how long it's been this way. Any help would be appreciated.

Try turning RAPID on

That does nothing for real world performance.

Try turning RAPID on

It's the 840 Evo that has rapid. Not the base 840 drive which is the one I'm talking about. At least it doesn't show up as an option for mine. I know cause I have an 840 evo for games.

That does nothing for real world performance.

RMA it?

I didn't wanna RMA it till I got some help looking for other solutions to the problem. If I can save it, I'd like to do that of course. But yeah, I suppose that may be the course I have to go.

is there an other drive you could test?

My other SSD. An 840 evo, is fine. It's just the 840 I use for my boot drive. Is that what you were asking?

yes and im sorry the last thing i would try is using a diferent port/controler but if that still doesnt work a diferent computer and only just then i would return it to samsung

Thanks, I'm installing a new cooler today so I'll do it then and let you know if it works.

Hey, if anyone cares, changing ports won't help. It's just a shit drive. :( What I'm going to do is just get another evo which is faster anyway and cheaper than they were when I got my first one. Thanks for the help everyone.

Thanks, I sorta figured that out after some extra research although I couldn't find the exact rated speeds for the randoms. But sequentials are near where they're supposed to be. I should have done more research before I bought it.
