My laptops hdd recently died and with it my windows.

On the back of my laptop is a sticker with a window keys, can i reinstall windows on a new hdd with this product key or what are my options.

All help is appreciated   :D

Yes you can install the version of windows that came with your laptop and use the same code to re-activate windows.

If you don't have a disk you can use an iso from here

In the answer there's a link to every version of Windows 7 other than enterprise from the Digital River host.

So all I do is download the version I have, burn it to a dvd, put it in the disk drive and use the key?

Is there any reason the key wouldnt work? :)

The key will work fine.

Use an ISO burner, don't just move the file to the DVD.

It needs to unpack it properly.

Here's the Microsoft software to do this (from the microsoft website.)

Case: Lian Li PC011-D - CPU: 3900x - GPU: 2080ti Reference - Mobo: Gigabyte - Ram: Corsair 4x16gb 3200MHz - SSD: 2TB Samsung Evo NVME

Yes you just burn the iso to a DVD or do a usb install (which i find is quite a bit more difficult), go through the install process and then when asked for the key input the one on the back of your laptop.

If they key worked the first time it should work this time, unless it's currently in use, and since the HDD died it can't be.

So there's no logical reason to believe it won't work.

As mentioned above by @acidydragon you need to burn the iso to a DVD, not just move the files over.

I find that a nice free program to do that is DVD decrypter.

All it says on the sticker is "Windows 7 Home Prem OA" then Acer Group then Product Key.

Im guessing the product key is the windows key and also it doesnt say what bit im pretty sure mines 64bit.

Im sorry if I sound really silly its just i want to make sure that it works.

The events were:

Bought Laptop:

Windows 7 Pre-Installed

HDD Broke

Got new hdd

Now researching what to do.

Thankyou

Since Microsoft made their own USB tool for W7/W8, it's not that hard anymore.

Any unknown button should be pressed even number of times.

Well

A.32 bit and 64 bit windows keys are interchangeable, so you can install either or.

B.OA just means that it was installed by an OEM and/or is an OEM version of Windows.

That code will work.  You might be prompted to call Microsoft to reactivate, but they will do it.

Windows doesn't consider disks when determining how much your pc has changed. Would be really mean to people upgrading to SSDs or replacing dead disks. Just make sure you install the same edition , x86 or x64 doesn't matter. You can install win 7 without the key and activate it later if you have problems and need to contact microsoft. Should activate online.
