Just managed to get my 7800x3D Build working; In windows it idles between 30c to 45c but randomly spikes to 70c for a few seconds causing my fans to spin up rapidly and then goes back down. Is this normal behavior for a 7800x3D?

Yeah, my 7700x and 9800X3D sometimes spike like that.

I can't deal with the fan ramping up and down so I just have a constant 30% fan speed, its enough to keep it quiet and cool even during heavy gaming! No noise.

Just make a less aggressive fan curve and you'll be fine 🙂

Is it normal for it to hit max of 68.7c and a package temp of 71.3c randomly? I have this from HWMonitor

I would say yes. AM5 CPU temperatures bounces all over the place when you open programs and just do minor things.

In true idle my CPU sits at around 35c, this is after my PC has been in true idle over night.

Would playing a game be the best way to test it?

Test what?

overall temp - to see if it overheats?

Yep.  Just use your CPU as your normally would and if its overheating then you got to do something about it.

AM5 / 7800X3D will almost always hit max temperature during a 100% load like Cinebench or loading in game shaders, and this is nothing to worry about.

I dont have time to explain all this now because its 2:30 AM and I need sleep, but I can give more information tomorrow.

Just be aware that AM5 tends to run warmer than previous gen CPU's from AMD / Intel and anything under 80-85c during heavy gaming is acceptable.

Yes the problem is default fan curves are usually crap, you need to make a better one that doesn't instantly spike if temps go up for a few seconds.

So far I enabled ECO Mode to 65w; I adjusted the fan curve. On Division 2 at like 200+ FPS it hit 73c and my room is really warm also. This is with a YouTube livestream up and several other tabs and in a discord call
