Be aware anything tinkering related to refrigerant gases is considered an environmental crime*, unless you are a certified refrigerant mechanic or engineer. Best leave that icemaker alone and even if you must, better not ring the bell too loud (read as: at all!), attracting attention to your crime 🙄

*carrying high fines and probable prison time, how much depends on your locale.

Phase change cooling has been done dime a dozen. There are very good reasons why it never picked up.

Has anyone attempted using the internals of a countertop icemaker to cool a PC. I have started looking into it and it looks like a very good idea. Video idea maybe!!!

If we're talking about using the ice cube coils to cool a reservoir: I mean, seems kinda bulky and wasteful? If you plan on doing it in actuality: look at how much power the unit draws at maximum load, and that's the maximum amount of cooling you can do due to thermodynamics and Newton's 2nd law (conservation of energy) meaning that energy can be neither created nor destroyed, so if you have an unmodified 100w of energy from the unit: the maximum you can cool is 100w.

Welcome to the forums!
It's a terrible idea. Pretty much regardless.
Most desktop ice machines are TEC coolers which are INSANELY inefficient. Both the videos that pot8 posted are fantastic. Regardless of if you want to directly cool the IHS/die or try to use them to cool a reservoir, you'd be dumping literally thousands of watts into cooling hundreds of watts of heat.
If you do manage to find a micro heat pump with compressor etc. then you're closer the realm of reality, but still well over the line of reasonable. Sure, it's gonna move heat more efficiently than a peltier, but it's still gonna be JANK, unstable, and potentially dangerous. Definitely not something you'll want to daily drive, and if you're just record hunting, LN2 is the answer. If you really were interested in trying to build something that wouldn't be a nightmare to daily drive, you could just get a water chiller and integrate that into your loop. They're a terrible idea, but at least they're designed for continuous use.
