Witcher 3 announced for Linux (includes SteamOS)

There's a big banner on Steam

It remains to be seen whether Valve's attempts to make Linux a viable gaming platform will be successful. So far (that I know of) the below titles have announced support, this is in addition to the hundreds of indie games.

-Native support from major game engines- unreal Engine 4, Source 2, Cryengine

-Improved dev tools and debugging

-In home Streaming

-GOG announced Linux support

-Support for VR

-All Valve games

-Witcher 2

-Witcher 3

-Interstellar Marines

-Civilization 5

-New Unreal Tournament

-Metro Redux (2033 and Last Light)

-Project Cars

-Homefront The Revolution

-XCOM: Enemy Unknown

-Star Citizen

-Grid games

-Tropico 5

-Serious Sam 4

That is not a huge list. But it is a lot of AAA games by Linux standards. I don't think anybody is stupid enough to expect this initiative to compete with XboxOne and PS4 overnight. If that ever happens it will be years down the line. But for the moment it looks like at least Valve's efforts to get increased game support has had some success. This will have the effect of pushing Nvidia and AMD to improve drivers, and pushing the Kronos group to improve openGL.

Got to wonder how many more announcements will come in the rest of the year... It seems that by the time Steam Machines eventually launch, and by the time the OS comes out of beta it will have a decent ecosystem. Steam Machines will launch in 2015. For the moment the OS is still in beta state, and the controller is not finalized.

Awesome, but here is the big question. Is it a native OpenGL port, because that would be pretty damn cool.

Yep, that's prob an important question. Although chances are better, since this is in active development and will release at the same time as the Windows version. Unlike the Witcher 2 which was ported to Linux much later.

Also I believe Witcher 2 was cheaper on gog than on Steam.

The good thing is that Linux and SteamOS users will be able to obtain games using gog. As they recently announced Linux support..

I thought they might do this, after what I have read about the Witcher 2 Linux port, I hope they actually use native OpenGL rather than use a wrapper again.

I've ordered the collectors edition for windows PC, I wonder if I'll be able to get a backup copy on GOG like I was able to with my Steam copies of 1 and 2 and get the Linux version if I want to try it out?

Cool but Valve needs to step it up and get better versions of the Steam OS beta out, like one that has a friendlier installer none of this "nuke the entire hard drive" crap, it's not like gparted is like new technology or anything.
