I haven't posted on here in awhile because my interest kinda died down after finally building my pc but Ive started watching LTT videos again & its given me the idea to start this up: Why do I need an SSD?

All over this forum Ive seen people swearing by SSDs but I personally don't see the point in them for anyone building a gaming rig who doesnt wanna go high mid or high end, the price to performance just isn't there. Is there any advantage to making a real effort to fit an SSD into a set budget build?

My 1tb WD Blue seems fast enough in games etc, Im always the first one to join and my net isn't the best.

If you are just gaming and dont really do anything else and don't reboot often. No. They're not really a big deal. If you run a lot of programs, have games that you can't stand load speeds on, and want lightning-fast boot times then SSDs are great.

People mostly buy them for the OS as your boot time is around 10 seconds compared to two minutes and then you have programs installed on your SSD opening up pretty damn fast too.

SSD is a great investment for an OS (Especially BF4 as HDD load times are insanely long)

you could always get an SSHD. SSD's are luxury items as many people will tell you. Give you faster boost speeds, and in most games will not give you any performance increase except for load times. I only have a 120GB ssd and I use it for Starcraft, WildStar and my OS (Win 7 x64) and i'm really glad I did. Worth it! As for buying big SSD's (500Gb+) unless you absolutely need it for your job or you're wealthy, I find a  bit absurd.

Win 7, which boots relatively slow (on normal HDDs with barely any startup programs except the normal processes takes quite a while, I'd say atleast 20 seconds. I boot it up in about 8 seconds now, including the programs I boot up with Win 7.

I love StarCraft

Once you go ssd you won't go back. You will realize just how slow HDDs are compared to SSDs. I used to be in the same boat but finally pulled the trigger and I can easily say it was be one of my best purchases. When I had to use my HDD to boot off of one day I was just wowed by how slow mechanicle hard drives were.

TL;DR - An HDD is perfectly functional. An SSD should be considered as an investment, paying more money for better performance.

Obviously that performance needs to be justified. If you have no use for it, it's not worth it.

I still recommend them for someone who uses a PC often. If you use it for an hour a day, it's probably not needed.

I do not feel obliged to believe that the same God who has endowed us with sense, reason and intellect has intended us to forgo their use, and by some other means to give us knowledge which we can attain by them. - Galileo Galilei

It makes a world of difference in terms of usability and the snappiness/responsiveness of the system. The boot times are more of an initial gimmick than anything else.

It's kind of hard to really understand the difference until you go back to a hdd after using a ssd for an extended amount of time and.

Ah I see, so its purely an experience changer than a sudden change. Sorta like getting a new monitor then going to a worse one.

Glad to see you're staff now too Wooden.

Actually, that's a pretty good example--it is similar to getting a better display.

Comparing a good IPS panel and a crappy TN panel is one analogy you could make for a ssd vs hdd.

The initial change can be sudden and stark though. It just really sinks in once you go back to a hdd.
