Should have spent a bit less on fans and a bit more on a decent GPU bracket.

I'm very dubious, as the whole reason anyone needs a GPU support bracket is if the cooler is not solid enough to hold the GPUs weight against the IO plate.
So tying the back plate is not really offering the extra support, if the back plate is that supportive you shouldn't need a GPU bracket in the first place IMO.
 

If you really want to be sure you should have looped around the entire GPU so that its not relying on the back plate.

Fair point, though I suppose the goal was to prevent sag which evidently was achieved. I agree though— the cooler should be sturdy enough to support the card without the need of a bracket.

lol these fans were from a water cooled rig from some time ago. Personally I think it’s kinda cool— I like the idea of a hanging support.

maybe the idea of a metal chain being precariously held up by a what looks like a pencil or broken chopstick.

It slips and ZAP!!!! there goes your system in a blaze of sparks and smoke.

and as mentioned above, all your doing is transferring the tension to just the backplate, so maybe not the best solution.

 

I hate tower cases, they are just so friggin' counter-intuitive to anything about how PC's go together.

motherboards were designed to be mounted horizontally, cards are designed to be installed vertically. Plain and simple. That way no sagging.

Go figure, who would have thought it would be so easy?

Somewhat agree, I miss desktop cases but they never really got the same investment as towers so remained fiddly with poor airflow and loud fans.

I also had to wait years for a decent desktop NAS case to come out and its still a few cm shorter than would be ideal.

I would just use ziptie to anchor one end of the chain to the GPU, then use another zip tie to anchor the other end of the chain to somewhere.

Less convoluted, looks better, less risky in the long run.

 

Should be easier to detach / reattach too.

Creative?  Oh I though it is really janky and a joke.

 

We don't usually post meme stuff, it's more of a status update not a topic for discussion.

 

But if you're serious then it doesn't look secure enough but if it is then okay.

 

Heavy gpus arent held horizontal by the cooler tensile strength or whatever.  Physics requires more support points than two sides with one being for contact only.

 

So no, a card itself can't necessarily do that, supports are needed.
