So im just wondering which components to order first when building a rig over an extended period?

Is it better to buy the minor components such as fans, cases etc that wont greatly affect the performance first or should i focus on buying the more major components such as the mobo, cpu and gpu as these are the larger expense in a build?

Or as a third option should i save up X amount of cash then make part selections.

Since it will likely make the difference, im looking to make a watercooled OCed i5 gaming rig with 770 level GPU(s)

i tend to buy the mobo/cpu first. then stick it in an old case, with older parts and gradually replace the old stuff as i go along.  case is the last thing i get unless i actually need it due to size constraints. a box is a box

All at once, because stuff gets cheaper and new stuff gets released too. Plus you can't use your PC until you have everything ready.

I always recommend buying all your parts at once.

The only time I would disagree is with RAM since the price fluctuates a lot if you see a good set of RAM for cheap jump on it cause the next day price could go up $20

Yeah i think in my head i knew waiting to buy everything at once was the best option but i have an urge to build and no funds behind me <_<

Suppose my next question would be can i base the money i will need off a build list made of current components or will this change massivly over the next few months?

PC components obviously don't work without each other, so owning say the case, CPU and some fans won't do you any good. Buy everything at once. By the time you have enough money to buy all the components they will be cheaper and better components may be released in that period of time. At least buy as many components that will make a working computer at once. For example you could buy water cooling components or additional RAM or graphics cards afterwards.
