Budget (including currency): minimals

Country: UK

Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: Jellyfin storage an others

Other details (existing parts lists, whether any peripherals are needed, what you're upgrading from, when you're going to buy, what resolution and refresh rate you want to play at, etc):

So I currently have a small media server running jelly fin - it only has 1 HDD slot. I know this was a limitation in the first place but I wanted a small cheap option that I could test it all working. Now I want to start properly using it, however need some form of extra storage. My Plan was some kind of JBOD/DAS connected to the server directly. I have an old PC case with about 8 or so HDD spaces so was going to use that. my question is how do I actually connect it to the server. Is there some kind of daughter board that can connect to a SAS connector or would there be Sata to USB/Ethernet options out there on the cheap. Totally get I need power supply but just struggling to get my head around what connects the SATA drives to the actual server.

any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Thanks, so looking at that first link you can do this with a Mobo without a CPU etc it just needs to be connected to power etc?

Yes, but note this....

Step 4: Install motherboard. It should be noted the MSI motherboard depicted below had a SM bus issue that prevented the HP SAS expander from operating properly when there was no CPU installed. I ended up swapping this for an Intel mATX H55 board and that one worked perfectly, as well as old EVGA and ASUS Socket 775 motherbaords. Those boards all worked flawlessly without the CPU and memory installed.

The second link is a much cleaner solution.
