Hi,

I have a cable installed throughout the house (LCU6-10CC-0305-S, according to the installer, is supposedly Cat 6—I think that's a bit of a stretch) and a full copper Cat 6A cable in the basement.

The house has three levels: two above-ground levels of 60m² (650ft²) each, and a basement of 60m² (650ft²).

There's an 18u rack in the basement.

There will be less than 20 outlets and devices connected directly. The wiring for 4 APs is already installed (one per level plus the outside area) and the installation for 7 cameras is ready.

Which switch should I choose? (Is it better to have one large or two small ones?) The following looks good in terms of price: TP-Link Festa FS352GP €250 Aruba Intant Go 1830 24p €155 Maybe there's something better? I'm not afraid of using used products. I'd like the switch to be relatively energy-efficient. Electricity is 0.24 euros per kWh.

Which APs do you recommend? Will Wi-Fi 7 or 6 be enough?

Do you know of any decent security cameras?

The internet connection is 1 gigabit fiber optic

well.. according to the manufacturer:

Quote

Application: Designed only to make patchcords with a maximum length of 10 meters.

i'm a bit late to the party here, but this is why my contractor isnt putting the ethernet in...

that aside:

if you have to ask, i'd already suggest to stay away from HP aruba, it's great stuff... but only if you have a use for it.

do you expect to put the cameras on a separated network (for security reasons), or is the goal just to connect everything and let the cloud deal with things?

i'd say always get the most modern option within reasonable budget, because that means you'll be using the same device for longer. you're not buying an access point for what you're using now.. ideally they'll hang there for a decade.

there's several directions you could go here, depending on what you want to achieve with the security cameras. there's cheap stuff, there's self contained stuff, there's expensive stuff, there's cloud connected stuff...

having all that said, look into ubiquiti perhaps?

I know, I already had a heated discussion about this with the contractor. The contract specified Cat6. I've already bought something decent for the basement. Some of the cables in the house can be replaced, but not the ones in the children's rooms :(.

I've never needed a switch before, so I'm vague.

Security is the goal, and I don't want camera traffic running across the entire network. That's why I was thinking about a VLAN or a separate switch.

It makes sense.

I'm looking for something reasonably priced and of good quality. Something like a Toyota car? I was looking at Dahua and HikVision.
I'm not entirely convinced by the cloud, although I see its advantages. Off cloud is good too. I'm not looking for additional subscriptions and costs.

Maybe. But why? All or just AP and cloud key?

LCU6-10CC-0305-S is Cat6 but CCA wires (copper clad aluminum , aluminum wire coated in copper), which have higher resistance, so signal will degrade faster at ery long long lengths (like more than 30 meters or so)

Cat6 can do 10gbps in theory up to 55 meters, but with CCA wires I woudn't bet it can do up to that distance.

Another minor concern is that the cable is basic PVC insulation, I figure you'd want to have LSZH (low smoke zero halogen) or some other self extinguishing/slow burn type of insulation.

My next question would be if you can you separate the security cameras from the cables going to regular room sockets, do you have separate ethernet cables going to those?  If that's the case maybe it would be cheaper to get a 8-16 port poe switch and a proper 24-48 port for the rooms. Maybe even go for a 10g switch for the rooms - though the power consumption is usually a bit higher (around 2-5w for each used / active ethernet port)

If you don't mind used, I'd suggest some examples (giving you links for ebay.co.uk)

From a company in Udenhout, Netherlands

 NETGEAR PROSAFE GS752TP V2 48 PORT POE+ 4SFP Managed Switch | eBay UK

48 ports , 802.03at  (poe+) , up to 320w in total ,

Avaya 4850GTS-PWR+ 48-Port PoE Gigabit Ethernet Network Switch AL4800A88-E6 | eBay UK

48 x 1 g,  2 sfp shared,  2 sfp+ 1g/10g .... though this one is older design, a bit power hungry (around 100w without poe in use)

UK sellers, you'll may get hit with some customs fees potentially because they're not in EU anymore, but it will still be cheaper than buying from US )

Netgear ProSafe M4100-26G PoE 26 Port Gigabit PoE Managed Switch with rack mount | eBay UK

24 gigabit ports , 15w per port poe (max 192w in total), 4 ports are shared with 4 SFP+ optical ports, management

40 uk pounds ... for Romania they say 33 uk pounds shipping, Poland should be fairly similar.

Extreme Networks Switch X440-G2-24P-10GE4 24 x 10/100/1000 (PoE+) | eBay UK

24 x 10/100/1000BASE-T PoE-Plus (
• 4 x 1GBASE-X SFP (unpopulated) combo ports
• 4 x 1GBASE-X SFP (unpopulated rear-panel ports) upgradeable to 10Gb Ethernet via licensing
• 1 x Serial (console port RJ-45) with RTS/CTS modem control
• 1 x 10/100/1000BASE-T out-of-band management port

so this one is 40 pounds and 40 pounds shipping, looks nice  ... but some people on reddit say it's not as easy as others to configure through management (don't have personal experience) and that firmware upgrades are not freely available and the switch you get may or may not have that license for the 10g ports in the back, not sure if seller tested those ports.

35w minimum power consumption.  380w poe budget, datasheet here  https://extr-p-001.sitecorecontenthub.cloud/api/public/content/5234d7ebd39e4317ac1f2b8a40e314e8?v=6b12ed92

from another seller

TP Link TL-SG3424P JetStream 24-Port Gigabit L2 Managed PoE Switch With 4 SFP | eBay UK

24 ports  and 4 SFP 1G shared , 802.3at/af up to 320w in total, https://www.tp-link.com/us/business-networking/managed-switch/tl-sg3424p/#specifications

Unfortunately, replacement is already difficult, and the sections leading to the children's rooms are impossible to replace. The crew buried the cables in the heated floor.
I've already bought an Alantec KIF6ALSOH050D for my basement. After a disaster at home, I salvage the situation wherever I can.

Yes, everything has its own cable.

I haven't seen one that doesn't kill with its price.

So I don't know Polish stores, but Netherlands , Germany  and UK are close enough, and shipping charges would be reasonable (would still be cheaper compared to new hardware)

As for 10g switches, thecheap ones I can think of are Arista and Quanta ones

Arista DCS-7050TX etc are relatively cheap, but they consume a lot of power , they idle at around 150-170 watts. so you'll pay a lot in electricity.

You get 48 10g ports and 4  40g QSFP ports (that can each be split into 4 x 10g sfp+ with dac cables)

Poland seller : https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/116822292249

UK seller : https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/365187754940

German seller : https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/116525404727

 and https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/266456191234

 and https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/145197717044

  • 3 weeks later...

By pure chance, for about $110 USD, I became the owner of an Aruba Instant On 1830 JL815-60001 revision 33. Whether that's good or bad, or whether it's a good deal, I have no idea. (The equipment may be used, but it looks like new, and the seller described it as repackaged, even though it came in a box with the Aruba logo.)
Now I need to get some APs, probably something from Aruba too for easy setup?
Do I need a new router or just keep the Funbox7?
