i got a really cheap used dell optiplex 5050 sff with an i7 6700 8gb of ram and a 256 gb ssd but im wanting to upgrade it a little bit and get a gpu in it

i had some ideas to get around the whole being able to use single slot cards.which would be to gut the hdd case and rip out the dvd drive and use a riser cable to get a 2 slot card in it

so what does that leave me with being able to upgrade to.

specs

dell optiplex 5050 sff

i7 6700

8gb ddr4 2133 mhz ram

256 gb ssd

Sticking an RTX3060/3070 or similar into that machine would be a great fit and turn it into a pretty handy gaming box. Depending on the PSU wattage you might be able to get away with not upgrading the PSU.

Another option is to get an RTX5050, which has similar performance to the 3060 but doesn't need any additional power connectors and can be a single-slot card.

I would also upgrade the RAM to at least 16GB. DDR4 is pretty cheap, especially the 2133Mhz stuff. You can get a bigger SSD as well for pretty cheap.

Honestly just sell and start over then.

Sell it and use your budget to ger a used gaming pc. The money needed to spend on this box with all the constraints will be more than just starting over and for the higher price youd get a worse system

It's a small form factor machine, so you're realistically limited to low profile half-height cards that get all the power they need from the PCIe slot. Even with a larger case, you're stuck with a low wattage power supply. You can get better performance than your integrated GPU, but you're limited to cards like the 3050 and Arc A310.

My advice is to keep saving, or start looking for secondhand AM4 build parts. It's not worth buying a minitower version of your Optiplex and moving the CPU over, given how old it is.

I sold my soul for ProSupport.
