I recently bought a oled, messed around with settings to prevent burn in as much as possible. Then I see this on my other non OLED monitor, a few years old. This only recently happened as I only maybe two days ago moved the icons to this monitor and the rectangle came up today after I moved a window from the spot where the rectangle is now. What is it? I assume not burn ir but something similar as burn in should take take months and months, no?

OLED is just a technology of display/pixels.

Burn-in or something similar isn't exclusive to OLED monitors. LCD monitors can have similar effects of wear too.

OLED screens just burn-in/degrade much faster

Image retention / persistence, burn-in, it's always been a thing. OLED didn't make this something new.

You can try those tools for stuck pixels that look like static, and rotate through colors. Sometimes that can help. Plenty of these tools out there that are free, or videos on youtube of this. Worth a shot.

It's likely image retention. It can be reversed. I had that happen before. It takes a lot of abuse. That being said the panel I had it happened to was from the Early 2000's and I used to abuse the living hell out of it, as I had Youtube on one monitor and web browsing on another. I never turned the screens off. It was probably about 10 years of usage when I started to have retention. I was able to reverse it.

What you might want to do is use a screen saver for when you walk away. That should help prevent this.

I just want to sit back and watch the world burn.
