What programs? What footage are they editing?

Do they have a system already? Most systems will do basic edition, so I'd get started with that system and see how it works?

Do you have any budget number in mind?

Mac mini?

No existing system. Just need a idea of what works best. 20+ cores over 8 good higher ones etc. I can Get older xenon cpus for example with 4 ddr 4 slots or Ryzen 5 setup for about the same price.

Mac mini........... Anything with a apple logo is Valued 100 times its worth here people will pay new android prices for 6 year old I phones just for the logo..... No Mac is outa the question.

While this might be for hardware advise, I'm going to give a little software feedback as that can influence the hardware choice. I used to use Vegas, older versions of which can often be found cheap on a sale. Then I moved to Vegas Resolve, which has a free version. The speed and hardware usage was massive between them. On Vegas, I was always wondering what could I upgrade to make it run faster. Vegas Resolve was just much faster on the same hardware, both editing responsiveness and rendering.

As for hardware spec, I'm not familiar with the most advance editing but Vegas Resolve uses a mix of CPU and GPU. I don't know how well it runs on really ancient hardware. The oldest I've run it on is Skylake-X and it is fine there. Older CPUs might have more cores, but older ones are slower too. Can you give an example of which Xeons? DDR4 era ones are not too old but might still be showing their age now. Higher core count ones often have low clocks so give less benefit than first looks.

Otherwise, ram, 16GB could do at a basic level but 32 might help. Think about storage, as video files take up a lot of space. I like editing off a SSD for better responsiveness, but capacity there can be expensive. Consider a mix of SSD and HD storage.

Again, do you know the program used and type of footage edited?

Basically any modern system can edit video, so it really depends on your requirements. For a basic edit a basic quad core and iGPU will be fine, but again really depends.

just to give you some kind of idea where to start, something along the lines of the following

IF you have a higher budget:

ryzen 7 9700x

AT LEAST 32gb DDR5 2x16 6000MT/s CL30

B series motherboard

as GPU you might want a 3070ti

850w PSU possibly 80+ GOLD

if you're on a tighter budget:

ryzen 7 5700x

MINIMUM 32gb 4x8gb ddr3 3444MT/s

B series motherboard

as GPU you might want a 3070ti

850w PSU possibly 80+ GOLD

Some time i dont read to well but there are to programs both called the same thing 🙂

So basically the best 4 core plus i can find at a budget. I saw a good as new R5 3400g with B450 mobo thats 4 core 8 threads and then all i have to do is look for memory etc.?

That was my mistake. I guess I wasn't awake enough when I wrote it! I've edited the post to say Resolve which is what I meant as the new software. Vegas bad, Resolve good.
