Building a case out of wood from scratch is definitely possible, but the end result depends on whether you're Tim Taylor or Norm Abram. I'd cannibalize a factory-made steel case for its motherboard tray and build around that.

I sold my soul for ProSupport.

Let me start by saying, I couldn't do it better. I appreciate the effort, and it looks better than what I would have accomplished. But that definitely wasn't DIY-Perks level of design or execution.

And using wood and making it a traditional case with glass panel seems to be a wasted opportunity. Wood calls for integrating it into furniture or making it more furniture like. Or make it like a Fractal North, but all wood.

If you want to have a traditional case, you quickly learn why metal is a superior material to wood. The only downside of metal is, a DIY person likely isn't equipped to build a case from scratch.

I think the critiques while not incorrect, seem to be missing some of the context. The video comes across as a passion project from someone who has good wood working tools, video equipment, and editing skills. I don't think at any point it was supposed to give the audience the impression of "This will be cheaper, better looking, and more efficient than buying a case off Amazon". It also did not appear as if the video intended to convince the audience that they were a DIY Perks equivalent. It covered their journey in expanding their skillset: the good, the bad, and the ugly. For that reason, I really appreciated the structure and pace of the video and it was indeed entertaining for me.

If you just want to try something and have the disposable income for it, why the hell not? Even if wood is not the ideal material choice for the application I am sure it will be a fun and educational experience.

If you wanted something that stands the test of time, all wood pc case might be very hard to pull off because of how much the wood structure can warp over time due to humidity and temperature changes. Not to mention that organic material like wood can decay if not in ideal environments or properly sealed.

Dreaming of the day when my brain cell doesn't betray me.
