Im looking for the following:
1) External SSD of 1TB

2) External SSD of 500GB or less

3) Internal SSD of 2TB

What do you think of the following options?

1) Crucial X9 SSD 1TB - CT1000X9SSD9

2) Kingston XS2000 500GB - SXS2000/500G

3) Crucial BX500 SATA SSD 2TB - CT2000BX500SSD101 <-Wait, I think this is for laptops? then I need another one, it's for desktop

Im betting on Crucial because I have an MX500 from 5 years ago with heavy use and still working fine. So I think im ok with these. I need another external one, 500GB or less, it has to have stuff like IP55 and protection in case it falls etc. Also no bloatware or anything "smart" on them, and no internal encryption required. I have looked up the Kingston one. I reckon Kingston was doing great ram years ago, not sure how they are doing nowadays. This one has what I need and looks lightweight and slick. Please let me know.

I'd generally stay away from the bx500. Its a dramless sata drives and those can really struggle speed wise, but if its cheap it might make sense

Why not get anouther 1TB external drive? IDK what your storing but extra space is often nice.

This one is for the computer. How does it compare to the MX500? I haven't had a problem with that one in 5 years. Access files quick enough. It just stores data, and I access it. Video edition, etc. I just need to expand this to 4TB. The MX500 is not easy to find now. The other 2 must be external for traveling. In one of them, 500GB is enough, and I like the smaller design.

What is the price like? Can you get cheaper drives?

I'd kinda ignore brand here. If you have backups then your data is safe from failure, and drives like the mx500 have had issues so no drive is perfect. Your single sample can't be used to guess reliability of a brand.

Well it's for work the internal one. I access files everyday, load, read, edit etc on this drive, 0 problems for 5 years.

Also, I think the one I posted is for laptops, I need one for a desktop.

What are the specs of your desktop? You might as well get a m.2 ssd if your system fits it.

Most desktops will fit 2.5in drives fine, otherwise, just stuff the drive somewhere.

Laptop or desktop doesn't matter, PC is PC.

Does your PC or motherboard have no slots left?

I have support for m.2, but I like to have these easily detachable drives. If I want to detach an m2 is so annoying.

To plug them into another PC? Or why would you need that?

In that case you could look at external drive options you were looking at.

If the drives are for backup files, perhaps you should choose something that's reputable or reviewed for longevity, or spec wise.

Im scared to format a disk without removing all other disks for instance, so I would need to take the GPU off and then the m2 module which sucks. But yeah I guess I don't take it off as often.

Which one 2TB would you recommend? I will compare prices. I've got the 970 Evo Pro as the main OS drive.

I don't know if it will support the 2.5in. The Crucial MX500 is 2.5 inch and it fits so I guess it's the same? this BX looked thiner on the pictures.

The thickness shoudln't matter the screw holes are the same.

You can also just plug in the cables and let it sit somewhere in the case, you don't need to screw it down if you don't have a spot for it.

You can also get 3.5 to 2.5 adapters.

I prefer having everything tied and screwed, I don't want anything that could cause just the smallest vibration or something.

Im looking at m.2's, prices went up a down from last time I checked years ago, so I may just buy one m.2, but which one?

Im also worried about the half life. I just read the 990 Pro has been reported to have short durability for instance. I want something reliable more than something top speed. If you can have both then great.

Decent 4.0 gen drive will do, some are better obviously, like WD Blue SN580, then SN770, then SN850X, then Kingston Fury Renegade is really durable but also high-end already.

As for the formatting, you could triple check the letter of the drive, and if you gave it custom name.

What's your budget? 100-200 $/€/else?

There is no perfect drive. I'd generally try to get drives from a name brand, but beyond that just make sure backups are good and you won't lose data. Assume your drive can fail at any time, so be prepared with a second copy if needed.
