Hello

So yesterday I wanted to replay UNCHARTED 4 on PC and during the shader compilation it froze up my entire system.

I got a BSOD then windows rebooted but it it wasn't seeing my M.2 SSD so it booted from the old HDD.

Windows explorer was not seeing the SSD at first BUT I rebooted then went into the BIOS and saw my devices for boot order was messed up.

I accidentally selected the M.2 SSD instead of the windows boot manager and it booted again from the HDD only this time windows explorer was seeing my SSD.

Having realized that, I went back into the BIOS and put windows boot manager as the NO 1 option to boot.

My question is - why wasn't windows seeing my M.2 the first time ?

Is my M.2 faulty or possibly screwed ?

No that's not good.

The field Media and Data Integrity Errors has a value in its field.

If it was good then it would say 000000000000000 in its Raw values in that field.

So some data on it is probably corrupted.

Do backups of what you can and then replace it.

I usually edit my posts.

Dude nothing is missing from the SSD i already checked, i was pointing out the SSD's health - it's 4 years old, im assuming 91% is still good considering the age.

What i wanted to find out why yesterday after the BSOD - it booted into the HDD, was curious why windows explorer didn't see the M.2 at first, but after a PC restart, it was showing up in windows explorer.

I also wanted to know why the hell did the OS needed to change the boot order for my devices.

Yeah the one that has caution - I know about that one, it's just a 15 year old HDD that i never unplugged when i kept upgrading. 😅💀

I never use it, it just sits without doing nothing, i should unplug it though. 😅

And your analysis on the SSD is based on what ? Look at the screenshot.

If the OS was corrupted then I'd probably be doing a reinstall of it right now and having issues with it which i didn't - only issue i had was uncharted freezing up during shader compilation mostly because the geniuses at Iron Galaxy Studios (morons who did the PC port) basically got zero skill.

FIrst time I ever had this happen with ANY game wether old or new - there's a difference between faulty hardware and braindead studio development.

Also look at my post above yours, I already mentioned what's up with the one with caution on it - i never use it, it's 15 years old, it just sits around doing nothing, i was just too lazy to ever unplug it over the years.

I think they might be onto something, though there's chance if it's faulty occasionally firmware update could fix SSD issues:

So that means what exactly - I mean the value ?

My M.2 doesn't have any drivers or other software according to ADATA's website.

Sorry I'm not sure I follow - what kind of errors ?

Like what are you referring to - only asking because i've never had any problems whatsoever for like 4 years, this is the first time something like this ever happened, i don't remember my system ever freezing up like it did last night in like the past 5 years or more.

I already asked my buddy at work to do the same test on his SSD just for comparison sake and he has like 2K errors on his M.2

His PC has never had any single problems and his SSD is out of warranty for at least 1 year because i asked him just for comparison sake.

3000 files ?

According to windows explorer - my M.2 partition has like 620K files in total, I've had countless games installed and reinstalled over the years... could it be that 3K got corrupted from said games ?

Also mine is already 4 years old, isn't 3K files out of 620K supposed to be somewhat normal given the actual age ?

I mean nothing is gonna be like brand new years later.

On original question, if a SSD has some major error going on, it can disappear. If you boot while it is hiding, then the system might pick another drive to boot off, and may not restore it if the drive returns.

I'm not sure how SSDs report the value being questioned. It is normal for SSDs to use ECC to recover data from imperfect flash. It only becomes a problem if there isn't enough data left for ECC to fully correct.

Suggestions:

1, follow instructions at this link which checks and repairs Windows files. It is normal to get errors reported in the 2nd stage because Windows is that great. You will get errors reported by the tool even on a fresh install!

2, if the game that crashed as the option then do a file verify and see what it says

3, use HDDScan or similar to do a full surface read of the SSD. Note the value in question before and after. If there are unknown problems on the SSD that number might go up. If you see slow progress in reading, that is a sign the drive is struggling with some areas. I've seen this kind of silent data rot in low end branded SSDs before.

No, that's the thing, like i've never had slow-downs or bad load times, like ever - this freeze from last night during shader compilation in UNCHARTED 4 was the first time i ever had like any sort of problems in the past 4-5 years.

What Crystal Disk was reporting about 3K files being corrupted though...

I think it's because 100 is concerning and 1000+ is very bad according to lot of people.

In past 4 years you could have had less than thousand errors too.

I even asked my buddy at work to do the same test on his SSD just for comparison sake and he has like 2K errors on his M.2

His PC has never had any single problems and his SSD is out of warranty for at least 1 year because i asked him just for comparison sake.

Possibly 3000+ errors doesn't necessarily mean 3000+ files corrupted. You might have noticed sooner if that was the case. We don't know where those errors are or how they're reported. If you want to try the things I suggested, especially the last one doing a full read of the disk, then we might have a better idea of what we're dealing with.

Gaming system: R7 7800X3D, Asus ROG Strix B650E-F Gaming Wifi, Thermalright Phantom Spirit 120 SE ARGB, Corsair Vengeance 2x 32GB 6000C30, MSI Ventus 3x OC RTX 5070 Ti, MSI MPG A850G, Fractal Design North, Samsung 990 Pro 2TB, Alienware AW3225QF (32" 240 Hz OLED)
Productivity system: i9-7980XE, Asus X299 TUF mark 2, Noctua D15, 64GB ram (mixed), RTX 4070 FE, NZXT E850, GameMax Abyss, Samsung 980 Pro 2TB, iiyama ProLite XU2793QSU-B6 (27" 1440p 100 Hz)

AIDA 64 says that it's normal though

Also forgot to mention I did verify the files for UNCHARTED 4 last night and it didn't download anything.

Maybe I misunderstood something. If you want to try some checks, I've given my suggestions already. If you don't want to do them, that's fine. If you think everything is fine, then there is nothing else to say here.
