Just got my hands on a rtx 5090 to replace the temp gpu (rtx 3060ti) in my newly built pc. Was wondering if there is anything I have to do software wise before the switch? my psu is 1300w gold so I know it can handle it and I am aware of the melting problem from people not fully inserting the cable (and I know I have to use the cable it comes with). So im honly wondering when it comes to software/bios. any help appretiated 🙂

Since you are moving from a relatively new Nvidia GPU to a brand new GPU you shouldn't need to do anything with the drivers.

Just plug and play.

IF you encounter issues then using DDU to remove the drivers completely and doing a clean reinstall is recommended.

But you shouldn't have to do this.

Change the drivers/Update them

Use DDU to wipe the old drivers from your system, then install the new ones

Afaik all drivers of a type (ex: "GeForce") are the same.

So a 1050ti really has the exact same driver as a 5090ti super duper ...  (Like they're all the same size too?)

Sure it can't hurt to DDU, but it shouldn't be necessary.

And Idk about the cable thing op, do some research, I think some cables that come with some cards are not recommended at all , but I could be wrong, hence try to look that up.

Not necessary but not a bad Idea to do it either

worst case scenario it doesnt change anything so no harm that can be done

I edit my posts for so if you saw a typo.... no you didn't, you are just crazy

With how much of a crapshoot 50 series and recent drivers are, I would do no less than the following (I do this for any new GPU anyway)

  • Download DDU
  • Download latest driver package from Nvidia
  • Reboot to Safe Mode
  • Unplug network
  • Run DDU - Clean and reboot
  • Install latest pre-downloaded driver package
  • Reconnect network
  • Enjoy.

Do you know what drivers do? I don't entirely, but I have some idea.

They definitely aren't same, so I doubt a GPU with 768 cores, 4GB of VRAM and 128bit bus width has same drivers as GPU with 21760 cores, 32GB of VRAM and 512bit bus width, ain't no way.

Nah, it doesn't matter, they contain all the codes needed... What you're talking about is more vbios and not drivers...

You can check yourself, they're all the same size and code...

I have no idea why they should be different (for same class of GPUs, ofc mobile, workstation etc will be different)

Because one is GTX and one is RTX and one is different generation, and one has different DX compatibility and native support, etc.

Yeah, that's why the drivers are gigantic. Like 1GB gigantic!

Spoiler

Here's the probable explanation: as said, bandwidth, feature set etc, that is BIOS. what "graphics" drivers do is translate the different Apis, graphic pipelines, etc, like literally AA, texture filtering, ray tracing... That's why people sometimes say "new game needs new drivers" which they very very rarely do (but still)

So if a GPU doesn't have ray tracing etc ,the driver doesn't care, it's not gonna use it on a GPU that doesn't have it - btw gtx series *does* support Ray tracing btw, probably even older cards too .
