Truenas not detecting gpu

My rx 480 is not being detected under the Configure Isolated GPU Device(s) menu however when I run lspci it shows up

What is your host system? Which slot is the card connected to?

It is an I7 6700, 32gb ram, B150M pro-D, rx 480 8gb in the top and only x16 slot.

It's possible that you missed step however my research ended up to just attempt create vm and add device as pci and see if it works then after that it should popup in isolated gpu list.

 

If that doesn't work is your system in boot mode or in efi mode?

 

So far my understanding this only works on efi mode and not legacy boot.

Another dumb question just to make sure… why do you want to do that? Just want to make sure you are not trying to add a GPU for a purpose that doesn’t really need a GPU.

VM’s are great, but you don’t need a GPU to use VM’s. Unless the VM has a specific need for GPU compute, don’t need to add a GPU.

Not questioning their life choices… trying to make sure they fully understand how VM’s work and what the requirements are to run them. 
 

I totally support playing around and learning, that’s the point of homelabs. But having the wrong assumptions can stunt learning. I am simply asking questions of why to encode deeper thinking and to help them better internalize why they are making the choices they are making so they can better understand.

That's totally understandable however he provided the issue he's having and provided list of hardware and asked for fix or if it's known issue or not and that's whole post.

 

He didn't ask any other questions or even telling story and he already answered that he just want play around.

A lot of times people don’t know what they don’t know. If you read this forum regularly, a LOT of issues are solved by asking “why”.  And a lot of progress toward the persons actual goal is made by asking “why”. 
 

You don’t have to agree, but I’d recommend you look at posts which were marked as solved, almost every one will have questions asking “why”.

Well fair point, however in this case I would've expected that gpu would shown up if there was issues simply greyed out with notification and linking to doc page.

 

But instead nothing in that menu then i would've thought two reasons.

Truenass bug or I've missed the step.

Naturally I would've googled or used chatgtp and find out and even checked GitHub or something else.

 

In this case OP wants correct answer fastest and luckily got me to solve his problem.

 

It's his choice and if he wants learn more eventually he'll come back here and ask more and learn little by little which is fine tbh.

100%. Nothing I have done has hampered their ability to learn more. I simply am asking why to better understand the use case, which more times than not, helps the person asking the question more.
