What are the chances that AMD or Intel graphics cards will go for 12VHPWR in the future? I'm trying to figure out whether to go for an ATX 3.0 PSU. Is it only useful for super high end builds? Currently waiting for the b580 in my region & I might upgrade in 2-3 years, but I doubt I'll get anything over 16GB, unless Intel magically conjures something better at that price range...

ATX3.x is more than a 12VHPWR connector. It's also the improved protection features, transient response time, minimum required ultra low power efficiency and some less important features. So yes, for a recent system a ATX3.x unit is recommanded.

Rather look at ATX3.1 not at "old" 3.0. As far as I've read the 3.1 has improved "12V-2x6" version of the 12VHPWR connector for one.

It does not mean that ATX 3.0 PSUs are useless, just not the most optimal.

But not much point buying a PSU in 2-3 years in advance I think.

It's an utter tossup, but I wouldn't pay any more than 5-10$ extra. Worst case you just use an adapter which is fine

This is exactly why I posted here, I couldn't find a conclusive answer on youtube/google. The difference is 25$ for the 750W ones. For the 850W there's NO price difference, but I think 850 is too much for me. I'll be having an i5 14600KF (at most, maybe 14500) & as I've said, a 16GB tops graphics card (and even that will be a future upgrade). I've calculate a maximum of 645W (300W future graphics card just to be safe).

All PSU options have a 10 year warranty, so I really wouldn't want to change it in a couple of years

You buy in the US?

If you're specing a system right now, I would HIGHLY recommend not going intel. 13th and 14th gen have had serious problems

Yeah, I've been kind of lurk-specing for the past few weeks, posting in each category whenever I get stuck with something. I'm sorry if it bothers anyone, I didn't want to post in New Builds and get overwhelmed by everything. It's the first time I'm building a PC and I really wanted to learn by myself, step by step.

No worries. that's a good way to go about it, but probably still a good idea to post in new builds once you settle on a partslist

Again, you will almost certainly have a better rig now and in the future if you go AMD. Either save some cash and get some AM4 goodness, or take a performance/$ hit in order to keep the future open and get AM5
