Can you wait until early 2025 or do you need one now?

Nvidia, AMD and Intel are all due to announce a new line up of GPUs in January of next year with the cards hitting the shelves soon after so at the moment, GPU stock of current gen cards is starting to dwindle with prices rising to reflect short supply or at the very least, we'll see this soon.

I would also say that since you've probably missed the bulk of the 'Black Friday' deals, waiting for the January sales might be worth waiting for. At least this is what tends to happen in the UK.

I'm looking to replace my bedroom gaming rig (9900k + 3080ti) and am going to wait until Q1 of next year. I'm also going to move to AMD my CPU platform so waiting for stock of the new X3D chips to stabilise.

With regards to going pre-built or DIY, if you have built a PC in the past or at the very lease, not scared or shy of the project, then absolutely, build yourself. With a budget of about $2k, you should be able to save about £200ish bucks in just labour charge alone. The only real benefit with going pre-built is the cheaper OEM Windows License, although you can usually find one online and a warrantee that covers the whole system rather than you having to deal with different manufacturer warrantees yourself

AMD are the current reigning champs for cpus in price, performance, energy efficiency, temps and reliability

For the GPU, with NVidia you get some bonuses, better RTing etc, but you pay quite a large premium for them, so amd GPUs are better value for money. AMD GPUs also often have more VRAM than their same tier Nvidia counterparts, 4070 having 12gb and 7800xt having 16gb

NVIDIA is currently asking an insane premium for their GPU's, unjustified I'd say. Intel dropped out of being a 3rd option as I've no idea how stable and capable their build in recorder is. AMD's Radeon is great, better than what I even remember NVIDIA's Shadowplay being.

Intel dropped its pants back in 2018 when it comes to CPU's and is still struggling to pull them up. AMD is just a way better option here and absolutely uncontested for gaming at the top end. AMD's AM5 socket allows for a new CPU to be just dropped in as late as 2027/28. Also a deal currently with the 7600X for a free M.2, another $50 savings on top of the already on sale price of the 7600X alone.

I think they're clearing stocks so the newly released 9600X can replace it in stores.

Also consider Microcenter, sometimes their deals are worth a trip, sometimes you pay extra just to drive there and it's not worth even considering. - so really only really if you live really close to one..

For AM5 getting the CL30 will give a noticeable bump in performance, small but definitely noticeable, id try and aim to hit the 6000CL30 sweet spot, if you really cant the 6000CL36 is fine. But AM5 is more dependant on latency (CL timings) than the speed itself (MHz).

You can also go for an air cooler instead of an AIO,

If getting 5600MHz RAM, aim for CL28, the latency is calculated by both speed and timings, you want 10ns of theoretical first word latency, which will be 5600CL28, 6000CL30 etc

And just to let you know, white PCs will often cost more for the same performance, or vice versa, will have less performance for the same price

System specs:

CPU: Ryzen 7 7800X3D [-30 PBO all core]

GPU: Sapphire AMD Radeon RX 7900 XTX NITRO+

Motherboard: MSI MAG B650 TOMAHAWK WIFI

RAM: G.Skill Trident Z5 NEO RGB 32GB 6000MHz CL32 DDR5

Storage: 2TB SN850X, 1TB SN850 w/ heatsink, 500GB P5 Plus (OS Storage)

Case: 5000D AIRFLOW

Cooler: Thermalright Frost Commander 140

PSU: Corsair RM850e

Case Fans: Fractal Prisma (120 x6, 140 x3) + 2x40mm fans

For all these options, just whatever is the cheapest, all will provide the same performance, for the cooler, probably the AIO as AM5 can get pretty hot and the liquid freezer series is the best lineup of coolers you can get for AM5
