Hello guys
I am new to PC building and stuff and going for a new build but stuck between these two cards: 3080 10GB and 6800xt; correct me if I'm wrong, but they're about the same in raw performance and selling about the same price in used markets, so I am a little confused: should I buy a 16GB vram card or a card with good ray tracing and cuda cores (not sure if I said that all correct). Also, I want the PC to be a little futureproof and able to do 3D rendering and stuff easily, as well as heavy gaming. I guess its too much to ask from these cards (can't afford the 4070 its out of my budget ;-;) . Also, its a little urgent, and i can't wait for the 50 series to launch so that these older cards get cheaper, sooo any help would be appreciated.
I apologise in advance if I said anything wrong 🙂
and yeah, the processor is Ryzen 5 7600x ( i think its great for these cards, but it can't raise my budget more ;-;)
Thank You All

whats your full build list, budget, and country?

considering the cpu choice im pretty sure there are other areas you can optimize in your build

this will make room for a better gpu maybe the 3080ti or even a 3090, 6800xt is what id usually reccomend over the 3080 but considering you wanna do rendering youll probably want nvidia or at the very least a secondary rtx 3060/a770

The 3080 10G already runs into VRAM issues when gaming at 4K. And actually using ray tracing increases VRAM useage even more, counteracting some of the performance advantage it has in ray tracing performance.

If someone did not use reason to reach their conclusion in the first place, you cannot use reason to convince them otherwise.

For your consideration.

3080 Pro

-Significantly better Ray Tracing and DLSS.

-NVEnc. This is essential if you usually work with video editing.

-Nvidia Apps.

3080 Con

-10GB V.Ram is starting to be insufficient at 4K for newer game engine. Still doing fine for 2K though, but for how long?

-Less efficient than 6800XT. Run hotter, consume more power.

6800XT Pro

-16GB V.Ram is plenty. At least for the next 3-5 years, with current generation of game engine.

-No V.Ram issue for 4K. Recommend 6800XT if you plan to play game on 4K.

-More efficient chip 7nm than 3080's 10nm. Run cooler, consume less power.

6800XT Con

-Significantly worse Ray Tracing performance, FSR quality is worse than DLSS.

-NVEnc is better than AMD VCE. If your job is video editor, strongly recommend 3080.

any main reason for hating 3080 this much ??

No hate, just objectively:

10gb is not enough VRAM

It uses too much power

It will soon be insufficient for most Ray Tracing games

Does not have access to DLSS frame gen

the only benefit is that it can use DLSS 2.0, but FRS is good enough and the extra 6GB VRAM buffer is more useful.

My kid and I are not the most hardcore gamers out there, but even my 3070Ti has been "ok" for the entire time the internet has been shitting on it. Same with my 4070Ti. I have not owned a modern AMD GPU so I cannot speak for them at all.

it can use dlss 3.x
frame gen was introduced in 3.0, frame gen is not dlss 3.0

this is nvidia's fault for the confusion really. the blame is 100% on them.

DLSS is a suit of tools. the version numbers say what version of of the tools can be ran, as in 3.0 is the first suite to include frame gen. but a game can run all the other updates that are in 3.0, it can also run ray reconstruction, which was first introduced in version 3.5 of the suite.
