I was surprised to see I got a generic, information gathering scummy survey sent by LTT to my inbox.

At the top it states:

We value our LTT community, and your opinions can help shape our offerings today. We’d love to hear about your experience with Linus Tech Tips and the LTTStore through the survey link below:

About halfway through the "survey" and so far has not mentioned LTT or buying on the store or anything. Just the typical "give us ALL your info" questions.

I never thought I'd get something like this from LTT.

Linus has personally stated on WAN Show many times his disdain for surveys like these.

What gives ltt?

Did you check the sender address? I've never gotten one and I own almost a dozen screwdrivers at this point. Just reading "to conduct this survey on their own secure web browser" has me worried. I don't know that this is real.

Is the sender's email weird or anything? I'm guessing it's just a poser.

I just don't understand the difficulty of making a courtesy PSA LTT Forum Post alongside mass email things. This survey, the carabiners replacement, and a couple of other examples I don't remember off the top of my head.

I know time is money, so it must be a lot more expensive answering mundane questions multiple times instead of making a single post.

I got the same email, seems perfectly reasonable.

Have you signed up for the newsletter, or for any of the "new product coming soon" notification emails? (I have.)

I am also subbed to newsletters, and also have purchased relatively recently.

....  okay, some of the questions are SUPER weird:

The actual fuck?

question.jpg.8bf01571690a75060543e4aeeb87075d.jpg

Okay, that was the last question.

The most personally identifiable things they asked were:  Age, Gender, and Zip Code.  (so nothing terribly specific)

And after a bit it asks about various media you consume, and then throws creators / creator stores at you to find out who you've bought from / would be willing to buy from.

Nothing terribly invasive.  Also waaaay less than 20 minutes.

Clearly what has happened is Linus recently attended jury duty and somebody wearing an LTT t-shirt snapped photos of Linus wearing enclosed shoes and sent those photos to a newspaper. Linus overheard that person talk about how they recently got married to their partner who they met competing in the Boston marathon and how they spent their honeymoon geocaching in Alaska. Linus also heard them saying they need the money from jury duty because they are going to struggle to pay back the student loans they just took out after losing money on NFTs in the metaverse. The whole customer survey thing is a sham, created just so Linus can track down that individual who exposed him wearing shoes.

Or, like people on Reddit said, the questions are just to invalidate survey results from people who put in random answers/bots.

Can you explain a little more please? TKitch's screenshot of the one one question is indeed strange. And what's with the thing opening in its own secure web browser?

Hi folks!

First I'll get the easy part out of the way. Yes -- this survey is legitimate and the questions that are being asked are all intentional. As far as personal information is concerned, the survey asks for your zip code and full name, and the survey opens in a secure browser in the interest of safeguarding that information to the greatest-possible extent, as well as to ensure that the survey runs properly.

The reason that seemingly nonsensical questions like the one screenshotted are present is to ensure that the user is reading the questions and not just selecting random answers for everything. This enables us to ensure as best we can that the data we're collecting is authentic to your actual experience.

That brings us to the big question: why are we collecting this data? The best way I can answer that is, we want to offer the best-possible products that we can, and part of how you do that is by understanding who our customer is. By understanding that, we can ensure that we're spending valuable R&D on products that you guys actually like, and have consideration for what your use cases actually are. We could spend a year and a half designing a sick new jacket and even if that jacket is objectively amazing, there'd be no point in designing it if it's not something the average lttstore customer would ever actually wear, right?

We totally get that surveys like this are not something that everyone wants to see in their inbox (quite the opposite, in fact), and while I can't promise that we'll never do this again I can promise that it's not ever going to be our intention to blast your inbox full of spam. Of course, if you never want to see an email like this again you're always welcome to hit that unsubscribe button.

Phishing and typosquatting training has made people a lot more aware and proactive. and I think this is a great example of the shift is user culture.

i think this has been a good example of people questioning what is legit!

Where I work, we use knowBe4 for Phishing training and this is something I would pull to trick test end users!

How the hell does that work?  It's very possible someone has done one of those things listed.

But you can select multiple. So the odds of someone having done more than one would be exceptionally small.

Also "none" + any other selection is an auto dq.
