Really hoping someone can help me out here. Countless videos, websites, and forum searches have so far turned up nothing.

I'm having issues with my recording on OBS (30.2.3). Specifically, I'm getting 50-80% skipped frames due to encoding lag. I feel like I've tried everything. recording formats, encoder settings, downscaling (from 1440p to 1080p) framerates(30, 59.95, 60), encoder bitrates ranging from 2500 to 10k, and encoder presets from low to better quality, and all of this when recording never amounts to anything over 5-10% CPU usage as shown from OBS. I've also tried saving to both SSDs (listed below) I can't for the life of me figure out what's going on here. For reference, I'll post my PC specs below. I'll also post the OBS log files from the 5 different recording attempts while I tried different settings. (2024-10-07 16-59-38.txt is the only test I ran while running OBS as an administrator)

M/B: ASRock B450M/ac
CPU: R5 3600x

Ram: G-skill RipjawsV DDR4 3200 (running at 2133mhz because of a Motherboard limitation I believe?)

GPU: EVGA RTX 2060
System Drive: 1 TB Inland M.2 SSD
Game Drive: 2TB Samsung 860 EVO
2 AOC 1440p 144hz monitors

maybe CPU, does your BIOS allow enabling XMP then finding frequency and dropping it to 3000? (or anything below 3200 to try?)

For OBS, you could try copying these settings:

While leaving everything else default.

Since you have Nvidia GPU, these two are gonna remove 2000% of the burden from your PC, by offloading 90% of the encoding to GPU:

Do you get skipped frames/encoding lag also when just recording desktop or only in game?

If it's only in game what GPU usage do you have? If it's 100% can you try to cap your frame rate so that it does not exceed 90% GPU usage and try to capture that?

good point some games i can't use OBS it'll just skip/lag even though the game runs totally fine, and what do you know Geforce experience has no issues recording the same game at twice the bitrates...

but if OBS works it just works... typically I use it for everything that's not a game... ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Typically launching OBS as Admin is necessary and sometimes also disabling preview as it takes some GPU load.

ah i never tried that... but it seems really random, i remember last time i streamed a game and the stream was awful... but the previous time i streamed the same game with same settings there were no issues at all.

sadly Geforce is even worse for streaming it often just "forgets" that it's actually logged in and streaming and just doesn't stream anything at all lol...

I've tried numerous times to enable the XMP profile in my BIOS. It always seems to end up getting reverted to default settings for some reason.

I hadn't tried this, but yes. just recording my desktop, I still have the skipped frames encoding lag issue.

What's your BIOS version?

sounds like a bug try an older version?

could be caused by RAM not running in OC

you are using a BIOS version from 2020,

if you need help with updating BIOS I can guide you, updating BIOS might resolve the XMP issue and allow it to run, perhaps even at 3200Mhz.

Bios updated, I've tried recording my desktop with preview disabled, and no change. It records for about 15-20 seconds, then automatically stops when the dropped frames due to encoding hits around 90-95%. My overall GPU usage never jumps above 50%, and the Video Encode never goes above ~40%.

not sure if anyone said it, but back in the day AMD tended to work better at 3000mhz.. not 3200 with XMP on.. tried that?

no clue about the video encoding tho. 🤣
