Adding touchscreen functionality to a TV

Is there a way to add touchscreen functionality to the TV?
The 2 main options you have are either a physical touchscreen by way of a glass overlay you place atop (rather, adhere to the TV screen permanently) or an infrared frame. Seems infrared frames are the way to go for people who want to lay the TV horizontally, then place things on it, like you might do for a game of DnD. Neither solution will be as good as just buying a native touchscreen display, but they'll be far less expensive, and a great way to re-use an old TV.
