So I just installed the new 5700x ryzen 9 to replace my 3700x

To my shocker when I turned on the computer it asked for a new TPM

And when I agreed I got locked out of my own computer.

I had some backup so I was able to recover a good 85% of what I had

This is going to get more common unfortunately, do you not use a Microsoft account? I thought it is supposed to save your keys there.

so how do you avoid getting locked out by tpm, it doesn't seem it's user controllable?

what happens if you just turn it off?

So far as I know, it is not actually the TPM that is responsible, so you can turn it off when you update your BIOS or whatever.

The problem, is that some services like Windows Hello and Bitlocker make use of the TPM, so you need to have your keys saved somewhere if you change the TPM by upgrading the CPU (unless the TPM is a hardware TPM).

yeah that's what i figured because as previously said i often changed cpus and this never happened.  i also turned it on and off randomly to see if it does something for performance (it doesn't) and nothing happened.

of course im using none of these data taking "ransom features" that Microsoft "offers"...

  • 2 weeks later...

This is the first time I've changed the processor with Windows 11 and the TPM

When I changed the chip  the computer asked if I wanted to change the TPM code because it didn't match

I said yes and then windows didn't recognise the TPM and locked me out.

Typically an experience with Windows 11 was my problem here

because the TPM did not match it would take a  Logon Code  or Video ID and locked me out from using a password .

I tried to reinstate the  Admin account with no luck  and just started over.

What are you talking about?
Are you talking about bitlocker?
Are you talking about your SSH keys?

Hello!

I, personally, keep the fTPM of my R9 9950X disabled permanenly.

Even the BIOS menu of my ASRock motherboard warns me to turn the TPM off when I'm updating the firmware.

So, off it is.

But, unfortunately, from time to time I get random BSODs related to the TPM 2.0 being off (That can be checked in the Windows Log).
