Will there be any problem with gaming on a 42" TV instead of a normal monitor?

No but if you are using it like a monitor -ie sat 2 foot in front of it, it will look quite poo, also if you sit close you might get neck strain if you are looking up at the monitor so be careful of that

if you are sat on a sofa a good distance away, then its perfectly fine

it depends on the TV. some TVs have loads of processing that takes time and increases input lag. if your TV has a "gaming mode" be sure to use that.

beyond that, it's basically a big monitor. I prefer to use a monitor, but there's nothing inherently wrong with using a TV.

There will be lots of difference...

1) 1080p is 1080p.. The more you stretch the same resolution onto a bigger canvas, the worse it'll look - for example, looking blurry or unfocused.

2) Input Lag is usually a lot lower on TVs than monitors.

3) Ghosting is more of a known issue, especially on TVs of that size (usually 32"+)

4) Response time could be completely off.

5) Depending on if you're comparing this to a gaming-focused monitor (for example, a 120Hz+ TN panel) you're obviously going to lose the refresh rate.

6) Although the performance aspect should be the same, it's the display quality that would suffer with a TV.

However, a lot of what I mentioned above will definitely be vaguely visible or not noticeable depending on the distance at which you're sitting. Obviously, the further away the better it'll look.
