Hi,

I have a bootable usb with Fedora KDE on it. But I am hesitant on whether to make the switch to linux, sorry GNU/Linux.

I use my computer for normal office stuff as well as video editing, photo editing and gaming. Would linux really do that well? Please be completely honest!

The games I play:

Gmod (Garry's mod)

CS2

hearts of iron 4

battlefield 2042 (I know EA is a doosh bag about this one on linux)

What do you guys think? I have had a negative experience with the linux community before so please be nice to a newbie

Firstly I apologise on behalf of the Linux community for your bad experience. Also no one who isn’t Richard stallman cares whether you Linux or GNU/Linux.

You can’t use software like the Adobe suite on Linux.

As for the games you can look up compatibility on Steams ProtonDB.

Liveboot and try it out for a few weeks. See what you think.

Its always a case of "it depends".

If you want to run everything you can on Windows, then a hard no.

If you are willing to adapt to what it can do and learn software that is available, then maybe.

I moved to Linux over a decade ago and for my day to day usage its been fine.  But I always keep a Windows PC for gaming and software I can't get on Linux.  I actually dual-monitor but one is Windows and my primary is Linux.

ASUS B650E-F GAMING WIFI + R7 7800X3D + 2x Corsair Vengeance 32GB DDR5-6000 CL30-36-36-76  + ASUS RTX 4090 TUF Gaming OC

Router:  Intel N100 (pfSense) Backup: GL.iNet GL-X3000/ Spitz AX Switches: Netgear MS510TXUP, MS510TXPP, GS110EMX
WiFi6: Zyxel NWA210AX (1.7Gbit peak at 160Mhz) WiFi5: Ubiquiti NanoHD OpenWRT (~500Mbit at 80Mhz)
ISPs: Zen Full Fibre 900 (~930Mbit down, 115Mbit up) + Three 5G (~1200Mbit down, 115Mbit up, variable)

It's going to depend. Games work pretty well. You just check the steam store and see what's compatible with the steam deck or check protons website direct to see how things work.

Like others said, some times you have to find Linux equivalent software. Some times you can use something like WINE to add some capability but some times there are issues with that. As in not all features may work. I have also seen issues with hardware not having Linux drivers, not all companies are Linux friendly.

I can say with 100% certainty that at some point you WILL have to use the terminal to do stuff. So you will need to be semi comfortable with a CLI. Im not an expert but I do know some basic command and I do know how to navigate around the file system with the CLI (takes me back to the MSDOS days).

Depending on your PC you do have some options. You can use a VM to run Windows for some software, not sure how editing software would work but some software will work fine under a VM. OR you could dual boot and only use Windows when you really really need to.

I just want to sit back and watch the world burn.

The worst thing that could happen is being a Windows user on Linux (or Windows user on Mac).

If you like Windows software and working with it the Windows way, then stick to it.  The grass isn't greener on the other side.

I've used and developed for all 3 over the years.  If you find yourself using (and favoring) a lot of commercial (proprietary) software, then Linux is likely not the best choice.

This post has been ninja-edited while you weren't looking.

Office, video editing and gaming should be fine with the proper Linux apps. Photo Editing I think is lacking on Linux mainly because GIMP is such a PITA. I think the best way to find out is to just try it. I personally recommend Bazzite cause it's plug and play but Fedora KDE should be (a little harder but) fine as well.

Asus Zephurs Duo 2023:

CPU: 7945HX

GPU: 4090M

OS: BazziteOS

Geez you guys are better than the first experience with the linux community! Thank you!

I think I will install it and try it out for a few weeks. I genuinely hate microsoft and I have an android phone so mac ain't the solution. I will make sure to keep you updated with the rabbit hole called linux

Be aware Fedora nukes patent encumbered codecs which could affect your ability to view or edit various Videos and Graphics.

There are however unofficial community maintained packages to get around it.

https://rpmfusion.org/Howto/Multimedia

This however doesn't affect Flatpak Apps from Flathub as they use they use the Flatpak Runtime.

If you enable Flathub support, it should make Apps from Flathub Available in the software center.

I would recommend checking out DaVinici Resolve, Kdenlive, GIMP, Krita, and G'MIC ( Can be used with GIMP and Krita ).

All of which are also available for Windows if you want to try them out beforehand.

office stuff

Be aware there may be compatibility issues with people who use Microsoft Office, for the most part it's fine however.

If you can export as PDF, I would recommend it.

I would recommend checking out LibreOffice and OnlyOffice ( Tends to perform better and have better compatibility )

These are also available for Windows if you want to try them out beforehand.

Just check the following resources to be sure youre games work.

As you seem to be possibly aware, Battlefield 2042 is borked on Proton.

Be aware most Linux ports actually perform worse than their Windows Counterparts running under Proton.

If you run games which have Windows kernel level anticheats only and use the abode suite then Linux for you is a no go, you can always dualboot to get the best of both worlds. If you want you can install everything on the linux dualboot and give it a try…

I don't. I pretty much play the Valve games or single player games. I decided to run a windows partition to play battlefield

Certain linux distro's, like fedora, are really 'there' but a transition from one operating system to another comes with adaptation and some pain. If you are used to windows, you will encounter things that are different and you will need to say goodbye to certain closed source software.  i used MACOS Windows, Ubuntu and Fedora as a daily os the past 25 years en every transition comes with struggles. My advice, dual boot, give yourself all the time you need, learn, experiment, and give alternative software packages a chance more than once. A hard transition is for most people not a great experience.

My friend recently did the conversion. He has had some odd issues with Windows 11 and doesnt like Microsoft's track record. Said everything went fine with the install and setup. Was surprised to see Gsync worked out of the box. Said things have been much better with Linux. I should also add that he works in IT and works with Linux on a daily basis, but said he was expecting the usual fight getting things setup properly and there was no fight involved. Said he didn't have to really use the terminal except for setting up his VM software. He was utterly excited to get away from Microsoft and its products.

My comment is this is wrong. Not hard at all.

I have here one person Windows one day, Linux the next after MS wiped her computer. She carried on with Linux Mint as if nothing had happened.... except nothing gets broken each month as it did with Windows.

Accounts, web browsing, emails, learning the violin, downloading and playing music, etc. etc.

As for the other over 50 people I've done installations for, they have used Windows, now carry on with Linux. One especially, couldn't get her assignments done with Windows, I did a Linux installation for her, assignments done, got her qualifications and a job.

The nice thing about Linux is that there is no need to install anything to your computer if you're interested in finding out more. Most distributions allow you to run completely off of a CD or even from a USB stick.

Here, I recommend an application called Ventoy that allows you to download and copy multiple ISO's onto a flash drive. Mine, at 32Gb has about 8 including Windows.

What happens is that you first boot into Ventoy and a screen appears that allows you to choose the Distro you want to try, then everything gets loaded into RAM and you can play around to your hearts content knowing that nothing you're doing is going to affect anything already on the computer.

If you want to you can then install the Distro and either erase whats already on the computer or it gives you the opportunity to dual boot with Windows,  here you need to choose how much room you want to give to Linux .

Then after you're finished, when you reboot a menu appears that allows you to choose between Linux and Windows. Quite honestly it takes about as much time explaining what needs to be done as to actually do it.

BUT, I advise that you experiment with a few beginner friendly distro before installing, so that you can get a feel for the differences and you will find that the differences can be a bit overwhelming,.

A couple of recommendations are Mint Cinnamon addition - very Windows like appearing, PopOS! another newbie favorite, and Ubuntu. There are others but these are the most recommended.

Good luck and welcome to the world of free and safer computing!
