So ages ago I bought a windows 7 home premium 64 bit OEM disk and installed it on my current gaming machine.

I was wondering if it would be legal to, say, buy an old xp machine for example, put my windows 7 on it, refurbish it and clean it up, and sell it for profit? (in theory).

I know the windows copy will work on more than one computer because i tried it on my friends old computer and it worked fine, activated and everything (the computer was going in the bin afterwards anyway I just wanted to see if it would work).

But would it be legal to use it on another computer to sell on? And what if i did it on more than one computer?

Thanks.

Well, in case the buyer needs to reactivate for some reason, just hand him a copy of the key. Usually automatic activation limits how many computers can be activated with one key, usually one, so you usually have to activate a PC over the phone. I think it's fine, as long as the buyer has a copy of that key for emergencies.

That's called a scam. And you can only have 1 PC running the copy of windows at the same time. It becomes deactivated after a certain amount of time if it is running on multiple PCs.

That's a lie. I have 2 PCs running Windows 8.1 with 1 key and it hasn't been deactivated since.

Unless you bought a key for multiple PCs it should only work on one. At least thats how it is with windows 7. Using one key for more than one PC is not only illegal, but it can be invalidated by Microsoft. In this case your key will no longer work for validating windows.

Well, I got a free upgrade to Windows 8 for one of my PCs, then I decided to buy a backup DVD with that same code.

No. Thats against Microsofts Terms of Service. You are allowed to use your copy for personal usage only as in machines in same house/family. Selling them would be same as pirating since you are copying one key.
